Elton John Opens Up About Heartbreaking Blindness Battle: ‘I Can’t See My Boys Play’
Sir Elton John disclosed that he’s been struggling with blindness, sharing that he can no longer read books, watch television, or see his sons play sports, during an open discussion about his challenging visual impairment on Friday.
In July, the renowned musician developed a serious eye condition that made him completely blind in one eye and significantly impaired his vision in the other.
Despite the challenges posed by his health issues, Elton shared with The Times, “I can recognize you, but I can’t watch TV, read books, or see my boys play rugby and soccer. It has been a tense period as I miss immersing myself in these experiences.
It can be quite upsetting, and it stirs strong emotions within you, but remember, I’m fortunate to live the life I do, so I need to adapt and learn to deal with it.
He commented: ‘I’m blessed with a marvelous family, and I can still perceive sights from this side [left eye]. Therefore, one might think, let’s carry on without delay.’
Elton resides with his spouse David Furnish, aged 62, as well as their sons Zachary (age 14) and Elijah (age 12). In a recent conversation, he playfully mentioned that the boys have traded their Eego and Star Wars toys for an intense passion for rap music.

Although he missed out on attending some extravagant occasions like the recent staging of the musical The Devil Wears Prada, the celebrity has managed to keep a optimistic outlook.
During an interview with The Guardian in February, Sir Elton expressed a fresh appreciation for visually impaired individuals and acknowledged his good fortune.
He told the publication: ‘I’m an optimist permanently, I’ve got bad eyesight at the moment.
There have been times when I’ve felt incredibly down, but then I remind myself of all the blessings in my life, and I gain a deeper appreciation for those who live with visual impairments. Despite this, I truly cherish my wonderful life, and I remain hopeful that my vision will get better someday.
‘I’ve beaten addiction, health issues and can pick myself up, dust myself off’.
In December, Elton John made an appearance on Good Morning America together with his spouse David. They had a conversation with Robin Roberts covering topics such as Elton’s life, career, and the intimate struggles portrayed in his latest documentary.
During the interview, the renowned musician shared that he sadly lost sight in his right eye in July due to an infection in the south of France. It’s been four months since then, and he hasn’t been able to see anything.
My left eye isn’t perfect, but there’s optimism that it will improve. We’re actively working towards making it better, focusing our efforts primarily on this issue at the moment.
In an effort to reassure his fans about his wellbeing, Sir Elton jokingly mentioned that he and David undergo regular blood tests every half a year in Los Angeles. He added that their health has never been stronger.

It’s always unfortunate when situations like this occur. I’m completely blind; I can’t perceive, I can’t understand, I can’t observe anything.
The hitmaker, who played his final shows last summer, revealed his eyesight issues in September.
He recently shared a detailed update on his Instagram, discussing the time he’s been spending at home over the past couple of months, recovering.
During the summer, I’ve had a serious eye issue which sadly has resulted in reduced vision in just one of my eyes.
My recovery is gradual, and I’m afraid it may be quite a while before the affected eye regains its vision fully.
I’m deeply appreciative of the exceptional medical team, including doctors and nurses, as well as my family, who have provided remarkable care to me during the past few weeks.
Elton observed: ‘This summer, I’ve been peacefully recovering at home. I’m quite optimistic about the advancements I’ve achieved so far in my healing process.’
And his health battles have undermined any new music from the star.

In another part of the conversation, he mentioned, ‘I might be able to accomplish that task, however, when it comes to actually going to the studio and recording, I’m unsure, as I can’t visualize lyrics right off the bat.’
Right now, our focus is on making improvements, and that’s what we’re actively working towards.
After Elton revealed a surprising declaration regarding potential future solo albums, he emphasized that he feels compelled to continue only with Brandi Carlile by his side.
On Friday, the acclaimed songwriter unveiled their collaborative LP titled “Who Believes in Angels” alongside American country artist Brandi (age 43).
During an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the artist behind “Tiny Dancer” expressed that he was determined not to repeat the same album. Instead, he aimed to create an album that progressed as he continually looks towards the future.
‘If I had just made another Elton John record, I would’ve killed myself.
I found myself deeply reliant on her – for her unique abilities, her vivacious spirit, her wit, and her exceptional songwriting skills. Among the finest wordsmiths in music are none other than Bernie Taupin and Brandi Carlile.
He mentioned that he found the experience incredibly enjoyable, going so far as to say that he would consider it an honor to collaborate on another recording with her.
To fans delight, he also teased that his voice on the album is ‘the best it’s ever been’.
