The third season of Elsbeth saw some big shifts with a cast member leaving, but the popular CBS show kept delivering entertaining mysteries and famous guest stars, setting the stage for an even better fourth season. Carrie Preston’s portrayal of Elsbeth Tascioni is uniquely funny – no other prime-time show makes crime this amusing – and fans will be happy to know she’s confirmed to return for at least another season.
Season 3 featured some of the show’s most memorable guest stars, like Stephen Colbert playing a murder victim, David Cross as a desperate father trying to get a doll, Hamish Linklater as a biohacker, and Steve Buscemi as a crossword enthusiast who turned into a killer. Also, airing alongside Matlock on Thursdays has helped build even more excitement for the show.
When Carra Patterson left the show as a main cast member, it significantly changed the dynamic. Her character’s partnership with Elsbeth had been a highlight of the first two seasons. However, the change actually worked out well, as it pushed Carrie Preston’s character to develop a stronger connection with Captain Wagner, played wonderfully by Wendell Pierce.
Teddy, her son, has become more involved in the show this season, and the supporting police officers have gained more distinct personalities. Meanwhile, Elsbeth has been stepping up to take on Kaya’s previous role. This shift in focus seems to be working well – the show received its first major award nominations this season after successfully changing categories from drama to comedy at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards.
As a big fan, I’m totally confident Elsbeth is going to be hilarious in season four. Everything I’ve heard about what’s coming up sounds fantastic, so I’m expecting a lot more killer comedy!
CBS Already Renewed Elsbeth For Season 4
CBS surprised many this spring by canceling shows like Watson and DMV, but Elsbeth had better news. It was renewed in January, securing Carrie Preston’s role for the 2026-2027 television season. CBS actually renewed its entire Thursday night schedule back then, though they are now adjusting it.
CBS moved quickly to renew Elsbeth for a fourth season, about a month earlier than they did for season three last year, signaling they were planning their 2026 schedule well in advance. However, the show’s ratings have declined somewhat in its third season. In May 2025, Elsbeth ranked seventh among broadcast television’s top 20 shows, averaging 11.5 million viewers.
CBS hasn’t released the complete viewership numbers for the third season of Elsbeth yet, but it didn’t appear among the top 20 most-watched shows when those numbers were last reported in April. Considering the show in last place on that list averaged 10.3 million viewers, Elsbeth‘s audience likely decreased by over a million people in the last year. Ratings for Matlock, which aired before Elsbeth on Thursdays, also went down.
When Will Elsbeth Season 4 Release?
The show Elsbeth is getting a small adjustment for its fourth season, but viewers can still tune in around the same time. CBS is moving the show, starring Carrie Preston, from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, a time slot previously held by Matlock. While CBS hasn’t announced an exact premiere date for fall 2026, they’ve confirmed that Elsbeth will return before the year ends. Considering the previous seasons premiered in mid-October, we can expect season 4 to arrive around the same time in 2026.
Most of the shows scheduled for Thursday nights will be different moving forward. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will still air at 8 p.m., but Eternally Yours will take the place of Ghosts at 8:30 p.m. And the legal drama Cupertino will replace Matlock. Ghosts and Matlock will both return later in the season. It’s unclear if Elsbeth‘s ratings will be affected by Matlock no longer airing beforehand, but the decision to delay Matlock was a creative one, not a reflection of the show’s performance.
What Elsbeth Season 4’s Story Could Be
Because Elsbeth focuses so much on how cases unfold step-by-step, it can be hard to guess what will happen next. However, fans can always expect the show to feature famous guest stars playing the roles of killers. The reasons behind these crimes are usually much lighter and more comical than the ones you’d see on other CBS shows like NCIS or Sheriff Country.
The final episodes of season 3 introduced several plotlines that will continue into season 4. Elsbeth’s short relationship with newly elected Mayor Alec Bloom (Ivan Hernandez) ended quickly, potentially harming Wagner’s chances of becoming police commissioner. Bloom gave Elsbeth a coffee maker as a gesture of impartiality, but he has a history of dishonesty.
Cyrus Tully (Campbell Scott) was appointed police commissioner, but his desire for revenge against Wagner hasn’t faded. Wagner intentionally humiliated Tully, despite knowing it could cause problems for him later on.
Fans are hoping to see Carra Patterson return as a guest star, allowing Elsbeth to reconnect with her close friend. Teddy will likely remain involved in his mother’s life as long as his job and relationship keep him in New York. And after successfully bringing Sarah Steele back as Marissa in season 3, there’s a chance Elsbeth might bring in other characters from The Good Wife and The Good Fight in the future.
