Four years ago, Taylor Sheridan’s prequel to Yellowstone, titled 1883, first appeared on Paramount+ and quickly became a hit. Even though it hasn’t been on television since early 2022, the heartbreaking story of Elsa Dutton (played by Isabel May) still deeply affects viewers of the Yellowstone universe.

Elsa’s story is told with a deep sadness, and the events surrounding her character’s fate over the ten episodes have long-term effects on the Dutton family, connecting the story to the next series, 1923. Though it’s heartbreaking, it’s important to consider what happens to Elsa Dutton at the end of 1883 and how it continues to shape her family’s future.

Who Is Elsa Dutton in ‘1883’?

Created by Taylor Sheridan as the first series expanding the world of Yellowstone, 1883 tells the story of the original Dutton family as they begin their journey west after the Civil War. James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) leave their Tennessee home to forge a new life traveling the Oregon Trail.

When James arrives in Fort Worth, Texas, he joins a wagon train led by Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott). Meanwhile, Margaret chooses to travel by train with her children for their safety. The Dutton family doesn’t make it all the way to the Oregon Trail, but they end up settling in Montana, where they establish a family business and gradually expand their land holdings, ultimately creating the Dutton Ranch.

Despite being a story about the journey west and the beginnings of the Dutton family’s power, 1883 is told through the memories of Elsa Dutton, who narrates with a sense of longing. Elsa, the adventurous 17-year-old daughter of James and Margaret, recounts her family’s past, and an early flashback hints at a sad future for her. Viewers suspect something tragic will happen to Elsa, and as the story unfolds, she develops from an innocent and trusting teenager into a capable and resourceful young woman – a skilled cowgirl with a kind heart.

What Happened to Elsa Dutton in ‘1883’?

Elsa Dutton’s move from Tennessee to Texas and finally to Montana in 1883 was incredibly challenging. As she grew up, she faced the realities of life beyond her home and experienced the pain of losing her first love, Ennis (Eric Nelsen). Ennis, a kind cowboy hired to protect and guide the family, died defending them from dangerous bandits, leaving Elsa heartbroken and deeply upset.

Having healed from a great loss, Elsa starts to fall in love again with Sam, a strong Comanche warrior played by Martin Sensmeier. Despite her background and family’s disapproval, she embraces the Comanche way of life, fully dedicating herself to Sam and his people’s traditions. This spiritual journey is reflected in Elsa’s somber storytelling, which subtly suggests a future hardship.

Elsa and Sam officially get married, promising a future together. However, Elsa soon faces a life-threatening injury, and because antibiotics didn’t exist yet, getting help proves incredibly difficult.

Elsa Dutton’s Tragic Fate, Explained

I was absolutely heartbroken watching the latest 1883. Everything started to fall apart in the episode “Racing Clouds.” We saw the wagon train venture into Lakota land, and tragedy struck almost immediately. A sweet German couple, Josef and Risa, both suffered terrible accidents – Josef was bitten by a rattlesnake, and then Risa… she was thrown from the wagon and didn’t survive. It was a sign of awful things to come for Shea and James. To make matters even worse, they stumbled upon the aftermath of a devastating massacre of Lakota women and children. It was truly gut-wrenching.

I was so worried when Shea and James decided to hunt down the people responsible for that terrible massacre, knowing everyone would blame them if they didn’t. It meant leaving Elsa and Margaret behind, stuck in Lakota territory while the rest of us ran for safety at the fort. They did find the killers and get revenge, but it cost them dearly – almost as much as the massacre itself. While they were gone, the Lakota came back and attacked. It was awful… they killed Cookie, poor James Jordan. It was a dark time for all of us.

Elsa defends herself by shooting at one of the Lakota warriors, who then shoots back, hitting her in the side with an arrow. Despite managing to calm the situation by speaking the Lakota language Sam taught her, Elsa’s injury becomes much more serious. They try to treat her wound immediately, but the episode ends with James telling Margaret that Elsa is likely to die.

The final episode of 1883, titled “This is Not Your Heaven,” beautifully honors Elsa’s spirit. While James and Shea guide the group toward Wyoming in search of assistance, they discover no doctor is available to treat Elsa’s severe injury. After learning her wound is fatal, the people they encounter urge James to bring her to Fort Laramie, hoping a surgeon can help.

Since Fort Laramie was too distant, Elsa found help from the kind Crow tribe nearby. Accepting that she was dying, Elsa made her final decisions, including choosing her burial site. Throughout the series, Elsa’s reflective voiceovers have been leading to this heartbreaking and deeply sad moment.

After tending to Elsa’s injury, the Crow encourage the Duttons to start a new life in Paradise Valley, Montana. James and Margaret agree, and travel there with their daughter, settling near the Yellowstone River. Sadly, Elsa passes away peacefully in James’ arms, resting under a tree.

Elsa’s death wasn’t meaningless. James and Margaret built the Dutton Family Ranch in Montana, close to where she was buried, to honor her memory. As Elsa tells her own story, she’s thankful to be considered a part of the family that continued for generations, as shown in 1923 and Yellowstone. If Elsa hadn’t bravely fought off the Lakota attack, the Duttons might never have settled in Montana, and their legacy over the next hundred years could have been very different.
