Ellie’s Aquarium Scene in The Last Of Us Season 2 Just Got Even More Disturbing!
As a devoted fan of The Last of Us, I must issue a heads-up: This discussion delves into spoilers from season 2, episode 7 of the HBO series, as well as The Last of Us Part II video game. In the chilling annals of Ellie’s experiences in The Last of Us, the latest adaptation has managed to make her darkest moment even more unsettling, omitting the controversial dog scene. In contrast to ending Ellie’s tale in Seattle on a suspenseful cliffhanger and paving the way for season 3 by exploring Abby’s viewpoint, the finale was brimming with somber scenes that underscored the depth of Ellie’s quest for retribution. Originally seeking to eliminate Abby and make her way back home, Ellie’s odyssey underwent multiple dramatic shifts, causing untold harm to countless individuals along the way.
As the devoted cinema enthusiast that I am, let me recount the climactic events of the finale in “The Last of Us” season 2. Two members of Abby’s group, Owen and Mel, met their end at the hands of Ellie, inside an aquarium no less. Although these characters had only minimal screen time up until this point, we can expect their backstories to be explored more in season 3, providing valuable insights into Abby’s motives, which were behind her decision to shoot Jesse in the game’s final moments.
Interestingly, the aquarium scene deviated somewhat from its portrayal in the original video game, and these variations serve to intensify the tragic nature of the confrontation between Ellie, Mel, and Owen.
The Last Of Us Season 2 Changes How Ellie Kills Mel In The Aquarium Scene
Mel’s Death Was Much More Accidental In The HBO Series Compared To TLOU Part II
In both the game and the TV show, Ellie threatens Owen and Mel to reveal Abby’s location. She holds them at gunpoint and forces them to mark Abby on a map. However, while Owen tries to disarm Ellie in the game, causing her to defend herself and shoot him, it’s Mel who attacks Ellie with a knife in the TV show adaptation. Yet, unlike in the game where Ellie fights back and ultimately stabs Mel with Mel’s own knife, in the HBO version, Ellie manages to fend off Mel’s attack but doesn’t kill her, perhaps leaving room for a different outcome.
Instead, on the TV series, Owen grabs a firearm, causing Ellie to retaliate and wound him in the neck. Unfortunately, the bullet also hits Mel, resulting in her demise after a poignant finale. Despite this change, the events that transpire afterward remain similar: Tommy debuts in Seattle during TLOU season 2, accompanied by Jesse, to escort Ellie back to the theater. Abby’s arrival then sets up a gripping cliffhanger. Although Mel’s death may appear insignificant given the ensuing plot points, her altered fate adds an extra layer of sadness to the story.
Why Making Mel’s Death An Accident Makes The Pregnancy Reveal So Much Worse
Ellie’s Quest For Revenge Feels More Tragic Since She Truly Had No Intentions Of Killing Mel
In the gripping world of “The Last of Us Part II,” I found myself as Ellie, confronting a heart-wrenching moment upon taking Mel’s life. In her final moments, Mel revealed she was carrying a child, an astonishing truth that left me reeling, given my ignorance of this fact. Although it’s debatable whether I would have acted differently had I known the truth, the TV adaptation adds an additional layer of sorrow to this revelation because, unbeknownst to me, I didn’t intentionally aim for Mel.
Struggling against her injuries, Mel managed to whisper about her pregnancy and tried to guide me through performing an emergency C-section. Despite her best efforts, she succumbed to her wounds during the process, leaving a profound emotional impact on me as the story unfolded.
The unexpected turn of events in Mel’s disclosure carries a significant impact, and it’s even more poignant given that “The Last of Us” revealed Dina’s pregnancy just a few episodes back. Ellie, as portrayed in HBO, seems to possess more compassion and regret than her video game counterpart. It’s plausible that she might have spared Mel had she not disclosed Abby’s location. Regrettably, the main character doesn’t get this chance to show mercy. The scene where Ellie struggles to perform surgery on Mel while she desperately tries to save her baby is one of the most emotionally charged scenes in season 2, and it makes the twist all the more distressing.
The Last Of Us Season 2’s Aquarium Scene Notably Left Out The Guard Dog
Ellie Killed Another One Of Abby’s Loved Ones At The Aquarium In TLOU Part II
Though the aquarium scene in season 2 was quite chilling, it could have been more eerie if it had shown Alice’s death. Although viewers haven’t met Alice yet in the TV series, she is expected to appear in season 3 as Abby’s companion. Unfortunately, in the game, Alice met a violent end, and it’s possible that the TV show will choose not to depict this. The finale of season 2 hinted at Abby’s story continuing in season 3, suggesting we may meet her dog, Alice, who was noticeably missing from the aquarium scene adaptation.
At this stage in the game, Ellie was no longer alive due to an unfortunate encounter with Alice during her exploration of the aquarium. This particular dog was owned by Abby and her group, and its demise adds to the sadness that permeates the entire aquarium sequence. Fortunately, HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us” has chosen to spare Shimmer the horse from meeting its video game end. This could mean a happier fate for Alice as well, which might make Mel’s unexpected pregnancy revelation slightly more palatable.
