Ellie & Dina’s Relationship Heats Up in The Last Of Us Season 2: Spoiler Alert!
Warning Contains Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3 of The Last of Us, as well as for the video game The Last of Us Part II! Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
In the third episode of season 2, the complex bond between Ellie and Dina is further strained in “The Last of Us.” The dialogue in this episode is particularly noteworthy and merits careful examination. The shocking events of the previous week’s episode left a lasting impact on viewers, and this episode aimed to explore how the characters coped with Joel’s death and the devastating battle that took place in Jackson, where an outbreak of Infected resulted in the loss of many lives within the city.
In the second season of “The Last of Us,” alterations from the original video game have been introduced, one of which involves a shift in character dynamics seen in episode 2. Unlike in “The Last of Us Part II,” Dina was with Joel throughout the episode instead of being with Ellie. This change underscores a stronger bond between Joel and Dina, but it also eliminates some significant scenes featuring Dina and Ellie from the game, such as their discussion about their kiss and its significance to them. Instead, we only witness Ellie’s side of the conversation when she talks with Jesse.
Ellie & Dina Finally Discuss The New Year’s Eve Kiss In The Last Of Us Season 2, Episode 3
Dina Brings Up An Awkward Subject After A Few Months
At the New Year’s Eve party in season 2, episode 1 of The Last of Us, a scene that was almost identical to its counterpart from the video game, the dance between Ellie and Dina evolves from a casual, friendly interaction into a passionate, romantic moment as they share a deep kiss. However, this tender moment is disrupted when Seth, who runs the bar, scolds them for their inappropriate behavior at a family-friendly gathering. He uses a derogatory term, prompting Joel to retaliate by attacking him, effectively ruining any possibility of a peaceful night for Ellie.
In season 2, episode 3, Dina joins Ellie in her journey towards Seattle to seek revenge for Joel. However, this goes against the council’s wishes. As the episode draws to a close, Ellie and Dina share a tent near the roadside. It is then that Dina brings up their previous kiss. At first, Ellie downplays it, but Dina insists on rating the kiss from 1 to 10. After Ellie rates it a “6”, the conversation takes a different turn for a while.
What Dina Meant When She Told Ellie That She “Wasn’t That High”
There Were Real Feelings Behind That Kiss
Initially, Ellie feels a bit awkward about the kiss due to doubts over its significance and reluctance to attach any deep meaning to it. Moreover, she is cautious about potentially interfering with her friends Dina and Jesse’s ongoing relationship dynamics. Jesse has expressed indifference, but Ellie remains hesitant in her discussions with Dina, justifying the kiss as insignificant due to intoxication and Dina being under the influence of drugs at the time.
In response, Dina admits she wasn’t “completely overpowered” or “very intoxicated”, indicating that she was still in charge and the kiss was initiated on her own accord. Although she may have been more relaxed and spontaneous than usual (she’s usually quite straightforward and outgoing), Dina felt drawn to kiss Ellie, and she has no remorse about it. Despite the current circumstances, Dina harbors strong feelings for Ellie, which is one of the reasons she’s agreeable to assist by joining her in Seattle; Dina wishes to care for her.
Will Ellie & Dina Get Together In The Last Of Us Season 2?
The Last Of Us Part II Video Game SPOILERS Ahead!
It’s challenging to predict where The Last of Us season 2 might head, but it appears quite possible that Ellie and Dina may develop a relationship. In the game, they were together at Eugene’s hideout instead of Ellie being with Jesse, which gave them opportunities to express their feelings and even share a kiss. Throughout the game, they often behaved as a couple, having tender moments amidst the harshness of their mission. The TV series seems to be setting up this romance, although it may unfold at a more gradual pace.
In the game The Last of Us, it appears that Ellie and Dina have a lengthy trip in their future, and based on the story developments we’ve witnessed thus far, their relationship seems to be evolving at a gradual pace. After Dina inquires about Ellie’s feelings regarding their kiss, they share another tender moment. However, Dina’s subtle suggestion that she wasn’t particularly moved by the kiss suggests that there will likely be more romantic interactions between them as the game progresses.
