Ellen Pompeo Just Dropped a Massive Clue About Grey’s Anatomy’s Ending
Ellen Pompeo, a star in Grey’s Anatomy, which has been thriving for 20 years now, has given us a peek into how the show might eventually wrap up its storyline. Despite Grey’s Anatomy ratings not being as high as they once were, it continues to be one of ABC’s longest-running and most beloved franchises. It’s an integral part of ABC’s history, with many viewers having watched the evolving cast of Grey’s Anatomy for several decades by now.
The show “Grey’s Anatomy” is currently safe from cancellation, as the network has already confirmed season 22. Despite lower ratings on television, the show continues to thrive in terms of streaming viewership. However, all good things must come to an end, and ABC will eventually have to conclude the series. It remains a challenge to imagine how they could surpass the dramatic storylines for a fitting finale, but Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, has hinted at a potential condition for the show’s conclusion.
Ellen Pompeo Says That She Will Never Completely Leave Grey’s Anatomy
She Isn’t Ready To Let Others Profit From Her Work Without Being Involved
Over a span of more than 20 seasons, as one would anticipate, the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” has experienced numerous transformations. Many characters who were interns during the show’s debut season are no longer part of the main cast now, making it possible that new viewers might not recognize many characters. Luckily, Ellen Pompeo assures fans that Meredith Grey won’t be departing “Grey’s Anatomy” anytime soon if she has anything to do with it. In her own words:
It doesn’t make sense, either financially or emotionally, for me to walk away from the show now. In 2024 alone, it was streamed over a billion times. This means that the companies involved in producing and streaming the show are earning substantial profits from using our images, voices, and faces. If I were to leave, they would continue to reap the benefits of my hard work for the next 20 years without me receiving any compensation. This doesn’t seem fair to me since I put so much effort into the show. Additionally, the show holds deep emotional significance for many people, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.
It’s hard to challenge her reasoning, given the trend in today’s entertainment world where remakes and spinoffs tend to move franchises far from their initial essence, frequently under new creative teams. This means that Ellis Grey’s work on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, spanning many significant episodes, may grow even more disconnected from her. Under such circumstances, it’s crucial to cherish the show while we can, especially considering Pompeo’s long-standing role in it. Fortunately, it seems that her character’s demise is not on the agenda for any upcoming episodes.
Pompeo’s Comment Hints That Grey’s Anatomy Will End With Meredith’s Story
Her Limited Involvement Won’t Keep Her From The Series Finale
It’s hard to predict if “Grey’s Anatomy” will conclude with Meredith’s demise, but as long as she’s part of the cast, her character will significantly impact the final episode. The show has a history of writing off characters in tragically lethal ways, yet it seems logical for Meredith to live until the series ends. The finale is expected to be one of the most emotional episodes for many viewers, serving as a bittersweet farewell even if the characters don’t ultimately receive happy endings.
Keeping Meredith present until the finale would make it more likely for other familiar characters to reappear, delighting fans. Not all departed characters from the show have met the fate of George O’Malley (T. R. Knight), Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), or Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey); Sandra Oh has hinted at returning to Grey’s Anatomy as Christina Yang. With Meredith’s current research on Alzheimer’s potentially wrapping up her story, it would be wonderful if some beloved faces returned when the series concludes that plotline.
Why Meredith Is The Perfect Person To Close Out Grey’s Anatomy
Her Importance Is Right There In The Title
Though the fresh interns in Grey’s Anatomy add a comforting nostalgia, the series has always been primarily Meredith’s journey. The unique spelling suggests that the narrative strays from Gray’s Anatomy, the medical textbook, indicating that Meredith’s involvement is crucial to the storyline. As Ellen Pompeo focuses on projects like Good American Family and her personal life, she continues to be a vital part of the show’s essence.
In Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith is almost always the one providing the thematic narration for each episode, with exceptions being when characters are more central to that specific storyline. It’s not that Meredith is absent, but rather her role is significant in shaping the show. The series wouldn’t retain its essence without her voice, and it won’t end until Meredith reaches a stage in her character development where she genuinely has nothing more to express.
