Elle Macpherson reveals why she decided not to undergo chemotherapy after seeing 32 doctors following her cancer diagnosis – and how her family reacted to the news

Elle Macpherson recently disclosed the private battle with cancer that she faced seven years following her diagnosis, along with her reasons for choosing not to go through chemotherapy.
In her newly published autobiography, titled after herself, the 60-year-old Australian supermodel devoted a chapter to detailing her holistic methodology amidst her surprising health crisis.
According to Women’s Weekly, she chose an unconventional approach for treating her breast cancer, going against the recommendations of 32 doctors and specialists, and opted not to use standard medical treatments on Monday.
Seven years ago, the founder of WelleCo underwent a lumpectomy and was subsequently diagnosed with HER2-positive, estrogen-receptive intraductal breast cancer.
As a devoted follower, I was advised by my trusted physician to consider a comprehensive treatment plan proposed by Elle, renowned for her holistic health strategies in recent years. This plan includes a mastectomy, followed by radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and the rebuilding of her breast, aimed at managing her condition effectively.
Elle expressed that the diagnosis was surprising, challenging, puzzling, and intimidating from various angles. It presented her with a chance to delve into her innermost thoughts to discover a remedy that suited her best.
Instead of following the advice of the 32 doctors suggesting chemotherapy, she considered it a fulfilling act of staying authentic to herself, relying on her own judgment, and trusting her body’s natural path as well as the decision she made.
She shared that she found peace and clarity on a Miami beach through prayer and meditation, leading her to decide against conventional pharmaceutical treatment for her cancer. Instead, she opted for a more intuitive, emotionally guided, and comprehensive healing method.
She shared that refusing conventional medical treatments was the toughest decision she’s faced in her life. However, going against her own intuition would have been an even greater challenge, she noted. Later on, she expressed her view that chemotherapy and surgery were overly ‘aggressive’ approaches.
In her prime, the model, famously called “The Body,” expressed that people may have considered her eccentric. However, she persistently followed a treatment approach that she felt was right for her, one that encompassed both emotional and physical aspects related to breast cancer.
She mentioned that she leased a residence in Phoenix, Arizona for a period of eight months. During this time, she received comprehensive treatment for her cancer under the supervision of her main physician, who specializes in naturopathy, as well as a holistic dentist, osteopath, chiropractor, and two therapists. This approach to care is often referred to as holistic.
Staying in the house alone, Elle said she spent her days ‘focusing and devoting every single minute to healing myself’.
As I find myself in what I prefer to term ‘deep-seated vitality,’ following my clinical remission from cancer, I must admit that my sons Flynn, aged 26, and Cy, 21, along with my former partner Arpad ‘Arki’ Busson, have shown a range of responses to my unconventional outlook on this diagnosis.
Her youngest son wholeheartedly backed his renowned mom, as he felt that chemotherapy was essentially a fatal blow. However, her oldest showed some hesitation in this matter.
“Elle shared that Flynn, who tends to be traditional, found my decision quite unsettling. Despite this, as my son, he will stand by me in any situation and continue to cherish me, regardless of whether he approves or not,” she explained.
Regarding Arki, the man Elle parted ways with in 2005 after nearly a decade, who is Flynn and Cy’s father, did not align with Elle’s approaches but penned a letter expressing his pride for the bravery she displayed.
