Ella Purnell’s twisted rage drama to return for second season
As a fan who has been captivated by the raw and riveting performances of Ella Purnell, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the renewal of “Sweetpea” for a second season! The first season was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, following Rhiannon Lewis’s transformation from a quiet wallflower to a vengeful force.
Ella Purnell’s “coming-of-rage” drama Sweetpea has been renewed for a second season.
In October, the initial season of a series originally aired on Sky, featuring the character Rhiannon Lewis, played by Purnell, who was previously shy and retiring. However, her character gradually develops a strong desire for revenge, which leads to murder.
The show is officially coming back for a second round, with Rhiannon’s character set to make a comeback in a sinister fashion. Her dark secret will deepen, driving her toward an even greater level of depravity.
Taking part in Rhiannon’s growth story through her ‘coming-of-rage’ phase has been a remarkable milestone for me as a professional,” Purnell expressed, upon announcing the series renewal. “It’s heartwarming to witness fans connect and identify with our quirky character, Rhiannon, in her intricate layers, which makes this moment truly unique.
“I cannot wait for audiences to see what she does next. Stay tuned.”
Meghan Lyvers, the head of original scripted at Sky UK and Ireland, commented: “Sweetpea is an exceptionally original series, filled with captivating characters led by Ella Purnell’s exceptional performance. Viewers worldwide have devoured this unique, darkly humorous thriller and eagerly anticipate seeing what more adventures await Rhiannon.
In an interview with Digital Spy prior to the premiere of the show, Purnell candidly discussed the complexities involved in portraying female anger on screen.
She mentioned that it would be quite difficult to narrate the story as intended, which aimed to evoke a sense of ambiguity in the audience.
“We want to relate to Rhiannon’s emotions and her motivations, but not to her actions and that’s hard, because to tell the story I think from a woman’s perspective, you have to approach it differently from how you would if it was a man. There are subconscious ways that we view women that are going to make us judge them a little harsher.”
In the United Kingdom, Sweetpea can be found on both Sky and NOW platforms, while in the United States, it’s available on STARZ. However, as of now, a release date for season 2 has not been disclosed.
