Ella Hooper doesn’t look like this anymore! Killing Heidi vocalist shocks with transformation in rare television appearance
In the thrilling world of music, I was a fervent admirer of the enigmatic vocalist who captivated audiences and soared up the charts in the early 2000s alongside her band, Killing Heidi.
This week, I found myself completely starstruck as I saw Ella Hooper and her bandmate-brother Jesse on Today Extra. Let me tell you, Ella had a unique charm that set her apart!
The duo conversed with hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys regarding Killing Heidi’s comeback on stage, marking the 25th anniversary of their initial album release, Reflector.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say I’ve noticed a significant evolution in Ella’s appearance, moving away from the vibrant, youthful style that once characterized her during the Weir and Mascara chart-topping era. Today, she carries herself with a more polished, sophisticated aesthetic.
Instead of her vibrant dreadlocks, bold makeup styles, and piercings that made Ella stand out, she now sported a traditional shoulder-length brown hairdo with highlights of bleached blonde at the ends.

Jesse, Brother Jesse, sported a new appearance as well, trading his signature long, vibrant red dreadlocks for a sleek, close-cropped style that remained concealed beneath a chic black fedora hat.
Jesse admitted, however, that he’s not yet ready to say goodbye to his former look just yet.
‘I’ve got two dreadlocks left hidden away somewhere. It’s not enough to make a whole wig,’ he said.
‘I could do one as a moustache and then the other one is a top knot.’
In a different part of the interview, Ella confessed that there’s something appealing about collaborating with her brother once more.
She expressed that they share a strong bond, both creatively and as friends, and they collaborate exceptionally well.
As an over-the-moon fan, I can’t help but admit that there’s a bit of a yin and yang dynamic between us: I’m the laid-back, messy type who thrives on spontaneity, while Jesse is the meticulous organizer who keeps track of time like a master craftsman.
After Ella disclosed the actual significance behind her band’s title during a spot on The Project.

’25 years on, who is Heidi and how is she still alive?’ co-host Rove McManus asked.
Ella playfully said, “We never mention her name!” Then, Jesse chimed in, “No specific Heidi were we referring to. We simply enjoyed the contrast in those words.
‘But poor old Heidi’s out there. Nothing personal to Heidi, we love you all!’
Ella added the band name had caused some conflict when she was at high school.
There were some individuals named Heidi who seemed puzzled by the statement, asking, “Is this about me?” But she clarified, “No, no, no, it’s merely a reference to the name.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that my cherished musical duo is planning to set sail on an Australian tour, marking the 25-year milestone of their iconic number one album, Reflector.
‘We are hitting the road to play the whole album and a few other fan favourites,’ Jesse said.
Ella mentioned that the tour would be exceptionally thrilling since they planned to play the whole album in the sequence of its tracks, which they hadn’t attempted previously!

The siblings will kick off their anniversary tour on Friday, June 20 at The Gov in Adelaide.
They will then head to Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
In 1999, the Australian music scene was shaken up by Killing Heidi, a band comprising Ella, her brother Jesse, Aaron Hart on drums, and Rowen Murphy on bass. Their smash-hit single “Mascara” from their first album, Reflector, took over the charts.
In the years that followed, the group added to their success with popular tunes like “Superman/Supergirl” and “Weir,” and they were honored with four ARIA Awards in 2000, among them Album of the Year and Best Band.
