Elizabeth Olsen Says Marvel Movies Aren’t Her ‘Personal Taste’
Elizabeth Olsen has admitted Marvel movies aren’t to her “personal taste.”
36-year-old actress Elsa, known for portraying Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe across movies like “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and TV show “WandaVision”, has recently decided to move on from the franchise. She confesses that she’s seeking out fresh projects that align better with her personal passions.
In an interview on the “Wild Card with Rachel Martin” podcast, Olsen stated, “I believe I haven’t consistently chosen work that aligns with my personal preferences, which is something I strive to demonstrate when I meet new people.
As a cinephile, whenever we gather for a professional meetup, I always seize the opportunity to share my unique perspective on films, literature, and more. I’m eager to demonstrate that my passion and discernment in these areas are not just hobbies, but they also significantly contribute to my professional outlook.
I’ve worked on Marvel for so long that my other work assignments should align with my personal preferences, as much as I cherish being part of this universe and am proud of what I’ve accomplished. However, it’s not the kind of art or entertainment that I typically enjoy consuming, which I have always been transparent about.
As a die-hard fan of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can’t help but feel incredibly fortunate and swell with pride when I reflect on being a small part of this extraordinary saga. However, the landscape for actors involved in superhero films has noticeably shifted over the past couple of years.
She commented: “I found these stories reminiscent of Greek epics, beautifully portraying the nuances of their politics and culture.
Consequently, I felt immensely proud to dive right in. Over the past decade, however, it has evolved into something of a trendy opinion, much like a controversial statement, when an actor expresses reservations about appearing in a Marvel film.
After it was disclosed that Olsen won’t feature in the upcoming “Avengers” films because of a packed schedule.
When The Hollywood Reporter inquired about her involvement in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, she responded: “No, I’ve returned to the United States.
I just finished [Panic Carefully]. I’m moving on to filming a pilot for FX [called Seven Sisters].”
After leaving Marvel, Olsen – starring in the independent sci-fi film titled “The Assessment” – expressed her satisfaction at getting back to working on smaller movies.
She pointed out that with a reduced crew size and ‘The Assessment’ featuring a compact cast, it leads to a tightly-knit community being formed as they collaborate closely on the production of smaller-scale films.
The 10 Funniest Movies of the Last Ten Years (2015-2024)
10. The Trip to Spain (2017)
There’s no better ongoing comedy series than “The Trip,” a long-running travelogue franchise by writer/director Michael Winterbottom featuring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. In each installment, these actors play semi-fictional versions of themselves on gastronomic journeys, tasting regional cuisines, reflecting on their lives, careers, and engaging in a perpetual contest to be the best Michael Caine impersonator. Initially, these movies were just funny; however, as they’ve progressed, they’ve developed deeper layers of thoughtfulness, as Steve and Rob grapple with themes like mortality and professional setbacks. If you haven’t seen any of them yet, start with the first “Trip” and don’t miss out on “The Trip to Greece.”
9. Blockers (2018)
To demonstrate that traditional Hollywood comedies still have fresh approaches, consider watching the film “Blockers“. Instead of focusing solely on teenagers desperate to lose their virginity on prom night, this movie cleverly shifts attention towards their anxious parents (Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, and John Cena), while simultaneously portraying the high school characters (Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlon) as hormone-fueled individuals. This unconventional angle gives a unique twist to the typical sex comedy genre, and the script is skillfully brought to life by a dedicated cast and director Kay Cannon.
8. Good Boys (2019)
In a surprising turn of events, I initially thought the concept of young boys acting out crudely was just a worn-out trick to shock audiences in the realm of teen comedies. However, I found “Good Boys” to be not only funnier but also more insightful about this turbulent, amusing phase in a child’s life than I had expected. The movie strikes the perfect balance between bawdy humor and characters that resonate with young teens. My frequent and boisterous laughter during the film might say something about my own maturity level, but as Warshow once said, “A man-child goes to the movies. The critic must be honest enough to admit he is that man-child.
7. Girls Trip (2017)
Incorporating a stellar ensemble of comedians such as Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, and notably Tiffany Haddish, along with a backdrop of New Orleans and an adult-oriented rating, results in a bawdy, uproarious movie experience. The film titled “Girls Trip” was so hilarious that it managed to secure a few awards, with Haddish winning Best Supporting Actress accolades from organizations like the New York Film Critics Circle. I can assure you: After watching this film, you’ll never view a grapefruit in the same light again.
6. The LEGO Batman Movie (2017)
For a while, my eldest daughter adored the movie “The LEGO Batman Movie.” We must have watched it countless times during a two-year span. To put it simply, this film is one of the most entertaining comedies from the last decade. It’s packed with visual jokes, puns, and Easter eggs related to Batman’s lesser-known tales, not to mention Will Arnett’s brilliantly arrogant portrayal of LEGO Batman himself. Compared to the kids’ movies I’ve seen over the past ten years, “The LEGO Batman Movie” is hands down the funniest.
5. Jackass Forever (2022)
As a fan, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm for the most daring comedy of the past decade that brought together the sharpest and most imaginative masters of silly humor. Once again, they delivered a series of risky stunts, playful pranks, and a record-breaking number of male full-frontal scenes in a mainstream Hollywood production. Now in their 40s and 50s, the Jackass crew might not be as agile as before, but they’ve never been funnier. Newcomers like Rachel Wolfson and Sean “Poopies” McInerney have more than proven their worth by enduring scorpion stings and being drenched in unsavory fluids. If this is the last Jackass, they certainly ended it on a high note, although it’s easy to achieve greatness right after a crotch shot!
4. Game Night (2018)
Oh, “Game Night”! It’s a delightful twist on a familiar setup – an ordinary game night among friends turns into an unpredictable whirlwind of hilarity. Packed with witty humor, standout performances by Rachel McAdams and Jesse Plemons, and a visual flair that’s rare in mainstream comedies today. This is the kind of film where you know after your first watch that it will become a favorite to rewatch countless times.
3. Bad Trip (2021)
The film “Bad Trip” weaves an impressively authentic narrative around some truly outrageous hidden-camera stunts. The story follows friends Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery on a journey to New York, with Howery’s character’s escaped convict sister, portrayed hilariously by Tiffany Haddish (nearly as amusing here as in “Girls Trip“). The kindness and compassion displayed by the regular people they meet along their travels come close to restoring one’s belief in humanity. In essence, “Bad Trip” serves as a heartfelt homage to the influence of movies in general, and more specifically, to the movie “White Chicks“.
2. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)
The movie “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” might not have been a box office hit (earning only $9.6 million during its entire theater run, which is less than what “Battlefield Earth” made in just its opening weekend). However, no other film from the past decade has Andy Samberg singing a song about asking for sex that’s as clinically efficient as the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, or features Mariah Carey bragging about her humility. In essence, “Popstar” is one of the funniest comedies of this century, and quite the opposite of the “Mona Lisa,” which is often overrated and mediocre at best.
1. Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve just got to share my thoughts on “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” the hilarious sequel from the brilliant minds behind “Bridesmaids” – Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. They not only wrote this masterpiece but also starred in it as two quirky friends who find themselves jobless at a Soft Rock, Nebraska Jennifer Convertibles store. With their severance pay burning a hole in their pockets, they embark on an extravagant trip to Florida.
In Florida, they cross paths with a tantalizing mystery man, played by Jamie Dornan, who turns out to be part of a sinister plot involving genetically-modified mosquitoes intent on destroying the town. Yes, you guessed it – the classic killer mosquito trope!
Wiig and Mumolo shine in their roles, exploring themes as diverse as Tommy Bahama fashion and the enchantment of the name Trish. The script is filled with witty dialogue that’s sure to be quoted long after the killer mosquito threat subsides. In these trying times, “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” has arrived like a pair of sparkling sequins on a pair of bell-bottoms, guiding us through the darkness with its infectious humor.
