As I delve into the captivating world of Henry Birtles, a man who embodies the spirit of horse racing and poetry, I find myself enthralled by his unique blend of passion and talent. His life story resonates with me, not just because we share a common love for horses (albeit in different forms), but also due to our mutual zeal for storytelling and the ability to encapsulate emotions in words.

On Saturday, at the QIPCO British Champions Day, Elizabeth Hurley sparkled in a white midi dress with buttons, paired with her friend Henry Birtles, who is a poet, at the Ascot Racecourse.

The 59-year-old actress was stunning in her sophisticated long-sleeve outfit, adorned with intricate white accents and a stylish high neckline.

She increased her stature by wearing tall, pointed nude high-heels, followed by adorning herself with a coordinating headpiece sporting feathers and gold accents.

The attractive brunette carried her must-haves in a light pink suede handbag, and accessorized her racing outfit with elegant pearl earrings.

Instead of keeping her hair neatly tied back, she let it cascade freely in soft curls across her shoulders, and chose a subtle smoky tone for her makeup when heading out.

With an evidently cheerful demeanor, she struck poses alongside her long-standing companion Henry, who exuded sophistication in his grey suit, complemented by a blue shirt and a striking green tie.

Henry, aged 57, who used to be acquainted with Liz’s ex-fiance, the deceased Shane Warne, is currently living apart from his spouse.

For quite some time, this duo has maintained a strong friendship, and in the year 2022, they posted a picture of them playfully rolling around on the floor, both dressed as Superman and Superwoman respectively.

Contrary to earlier speculations suggesting romantic involvement, he clarified to The Sun that they were simply friends. He stated, “It was fun, alright, it was after midnight.

Everyone indulged a tad too much alcohol, leading to an impromptu friendly match of Superman versus Supergirl, which was captured in a photograph. Overall, it was quite playful and fun.

I served as his best man at the wedding, and we’ve been incredibly close friends for a long time. Beyond that, our relationship remains purely platonic. On various occasions, Elizabeth has accompanied me to horse races. I count Shane Warne among my friends.

Speaking as a longtime friend of Mike Myers, who plays Austin Powers, he remarked: ‘Nothing much, it seems everything has taken an unexpected turn for the worse.’

Known as “The Racing Poet,” Henry’s site says that his poems are often performed at Cheltenham Gold Cup Day, where he shares them with the audience.

Under the bright sunlight, Liz’s laughter echoed as she completed her fashionable attire with a pair of sunglasses.

Henry, the head of HBA Media, a specialized consultancy handling television rights for horse racing, aims to expand the reach of horse racing events.

The website explains that Henry’s work embodies the rhythm and wit inherent in sports, all thanks to his ardor for racing.

His straightforward poems, reminiscent of classic style, stir memories and personalities that are iconic within the realm of racing.

If you prefer poetry that evokes emotions simply, without the need for complex analysis, then Birtles’ work is ideal for you.

Through verses that rhyme, his poetry stirs readers’ imaginations,

‘Although racing is Henry’s major passion, he has also written poems on a wide range of subjects including cricket, harvest, the World Cup, as well as touching odes dedicated to friends and family. There is no subject this modern-day bard cannot turn into lyrical and engaging poetry.’

The writer, who describes himself as ‘fanatical and unashamedly passionate about’ racing, says he prefers to call his writing ‘rhymes’ rather than ‘poems’.

On my site, I choose to label my work as “rhymes” out of respect for the esteemed poets, rather than inadvertently offending them by suggesting that my writing is comparable to their great works.

They may not be particularly intelligent, but I believe they capture the sentiments of racing enthusiasts regarding this sport, as well as their cherished recollections of remarkable horses and races that we’ve had the good fortune to experience.

Besides performing his poetry at Cheltenham, Henry often receives commissions from jockey clubs and horse owners for their events.

He’s also appeared on various TV networks, such as the BBC, Channel 4, and Dubai Sports Channel.
