Rumors are swirling that the original cast is reuniting for the newest Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum. Elijah Wood, who famously played Frodo Baggins, hasn’t been in a Lord of the Rings film since a quick appearance in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey back in 2012. But now, it seems like he’s hinting that he’ll be involved in this upcoming movie, which will also feature Ian McKellen reprising his role as Gandalf.
So, at a recent Fan Expo in New Orleans, I heard Elijah Wood talk about what Ian McKellen said regarding The Hunt for Gollum. Apparently, McKellen let slip that both Frodo and Gandalf are in the movie, and while Elijah didn’t directly confirm or deny it, he did cheekily point out that you can always trust a wizard! He also seemed genuinely thrilled about Andy Serkis’ project, especially because it’s bringing a lot of the original Lord of the Rings crew back together. It sounds like The Hunt for Gollum might be the first of a bunch of new films exploring that era of Middle-earth, which is really exciting!
I can’t say anything for sure, but trust me, a wizard knows what’s up. Officially, I’m not permitted to confirm anything. However, I’m incredibly enthusiastic about the new film! It feels like a wonderful reunion of the original creative team. Many of the key people who worked on the first one are back, including Philippa Boyens, who’s co-writing and producing. We’re all working together to tell a story that will be a really enjoyable and in-depth look at a character we all adore, and I’m just really excited to see how it turns out.
I’m really happy Andy’s directing the film. It feels perfect that he’s taking on a story about a character he’s truly made his own. I’m very enthusiastic about it, and I think it’ll be fantastic. I’m also looking forward to seeing where they take this world, as they plan to create more films within it – that’s a really exciting prospect.
