Elijah Wood, known for playing Frodo Baggins, hinted at some exciting surprise appearances in the upcoming 2027 movie, *The Hunt for Gollum*, during a recent fan event. The film, a new installment in *The Lord of the Rings* series, will be directed by Andy Serkis, who has a long history with the franchise. It’s based on additional writings from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original books. Several original cast members are returning, including Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Wood himself as Frodo.
While at Mexico’s DesertCon, actor Elijah Wood, known for his role in *The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum*, discussed the upcoming *Lord of the Rings* movie planned for 2027. He suggested the film might feature a large number of cameo appearances and praised its strong behind-the-scenes connections to the original films. A fan captured the comments on video (via Asi SoyTv) at the convention in Monterrey.
I’m not able to share details just yet, but I’m very familiar with the project – I’ve had a chance to read it and it’s excellent. It features a fantastic team, and it’s exciting to see the original creative group from ‘Lord of the Rings’ – Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, and Philippa Boyens – working on it again.
The production team, including the designers, will be the same as before, and filming will take place in New Zealand. This will maintain a strong connection to ‘Lord of the Rings,’ as many of the original people are involved, which I’m very enthusiastic about. It’s like reuniting a fantastic team and getting back to work with everyone who knows exactly what we’re doing.
This has sparked speculation that the highly anticipated 2027 film won’t just feature Frodo and Gandalf, and that other beloved characters from *The Lord of the Rings* might also make appearances.
Originally planned for release in December 2026, the film *The Hunt for Gollum* will now come out in December 2027, as director Andy Serkis shared with TopMob earlier this year. The stars of the original *Lord of the Rings* trilogy – Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, and Elijah Wood – are all returning to their iconic roles, and filming is scheduled to begin in New Zealand next year.
Who Else Could Appear in The Hunt for Gollum?

Elijah Wood didn’t reveal much about *The Hunt for Gollum*, but his hint that the movie involves reuniting the original cast suggests exciting possibilities for familiar faces from Middle-earth.
The upcoming 2027 *Lord of the Rings* movie will likely include several important characters from the original trilogy, playing significant parts.
Gandalf sets out to find Gollum after learning he might be sharing secrets about the One Ring with the dark lord Sauron. He enlists the help of the courageous Aragorn (portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in the *Lord of the Rings* films) to aid in the search.
Considering how important Aragorn is to the story, it’s likely Viggo Mortensen will reprise his role as the strong warrior in the upcoming film. Another key character from the original stories is Arwen (Liv Tyler), a half-elf and Aragorn’s love interest. If the movie stays true to the source material, both characters should be included, though some changes are possible.
Frodo isn’t in the original *Hunt for Gollum* story, but with Elijah Wood reprising his role, fans are hoping to see other members of the Fellowship appear, like Gimli (played by John Rhys-Davies) and Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom).
