Taylor is about to be released from prison after a long sentence, but his fresh start is threatened when a new cellmate, Dee, pulls him into dangerous conflicts with other inmates. To make matters worse, Taylor’s son has grown up while he was away.

Okay, so everyone’s already losing their minds over this movie! It totally crushed it with the critics and got amazing reviews after it first showed at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September. Seriously, the buzz is real.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a perfect 100% rating based on 10 reviews. The Arts Desk praised it, saying the strong performances from the two lead actors and the director’s focused approach suggest it has a lot of potential.

Okay, so I just finished watching Wasteman, and wow. It’s a really intense prison movie – seriously stressful and unsettling, but in a good way. David Jonsson and Tom Blyth are both incredible in it, giving these really strong performances. The director, Cal McMau, clearly knows what he’s doing, because the whole thing just feels expertly crafted.

According to Time Out, while Wasteman doesn’t deeply explore the social and political issues within prison, it powerfully portrays the emotional struggle to survive. The film demonstrates that the most frightening aspect of being incarcerated can simply be the other inmates.

Free tickets for Wasteman will be available at Escapes from 2 February.
