Election 2024 (Taylor’s Version): Swift outswaggers Trump with her Kamala Harris vote
As a seasoned movie buff and pop culture aficionado, I can’t help but draw parallels between Taylor Swift’s political endorsement journey and a classic Hollywood tale of transformation and empowerment.
During the presidential debate on Tuesday, Kamala Harris displayed a mix of contempt, compassion, and astonishment toward her opponent, much like the attitude Taylor Swift portrays in her song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.” In this tale, Swift deftly critiques a man whose deceitful schemes have ultimately unraveled.
She mentioned that, similar to many others, she tuned in to the debate tonight. She made it clear that she intends to closely follow and absorb as much information as possible about each candidate’s proposed policies and plans for our nation. Harris, in her view, deserves her vote because she vigorously advocates for the rights and issues that I consider worthy of a strong advocate.
Swift’s endorsement of Harris was probably inevitable.
In 2018, having previously avoided politics, she announced to her followers that she would be voting for Democrat Phil Bredesen instead of Republican Marsha Blackburn in the U.S. Senate race from Tennessee. Furthermore, in 2020, she expressed her endorsement for Joe Biden during his election campaign against then-President Trump. She shared a picture on V Magazine of herself holding a tray of Biden-Harris cookies and stated, “I believe America can initiate the healing it urgently requires.
However, it seems distinctly different now, particularly due to the remarkable increase in Swift’s fame over the past four years.
In a nutshell, Swift’s successful Eras tour, her hit re-recordings from earlier in her career, winning the fourth album of the year at the Grammys, and her high-profile romance with NFL player Travis Kelce have solidified her as one of the most well-known individuals globally. She boasts a massive and devoted fanbase, which is particularly attractive to politicians due to the influence of young voters.
Indeed, Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, were delighted by Swift’s apparent endorsement: As soon as the singer posted on Instagram, the campaign store began selling friendship bracelets reminiscent of those exchanged among Swifties at Eras tour concerts. When Rachel Maddow shared during MSNBC that Swift had backed them on Tuesday night, Walz beamed like he’d just struck gold.
However, what sets Swift’s endorsement apart this time isn’t merely its magnitude; it’s also the way she delivers her message.
Referencing the often-debated statements by Mike Pence’s vice presidential nominee, Ohio Senator JD Vance, concerning women without children, Taylor Swift labeled her message as “Childless Cat Lady” – a somewhat mocking display of independence in her political discussions, which is unusual for her.
The attitude aligns well with Swift’s recent album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” and is particularly evident in a song like “But Daddy I Love Him.” In this track, she seems to be poking fun at the conservative section of her fanbase who criticized her past relationship with Matty Healy from The 1975, due to offensive humor he had used.
She croons, ‘May blessings be for those hypocrites claiming to look out for me,’ expressing disdain for their self-righteous monologues that I’ll never witness.
The song “But Daddy I Love Him” symbolizes breaking free from societal expectations and norms, shattering those constraints forcefully. This theme resonated even before the debate, as Taylor Swift was pictured at the U.S. Open in New York, embracing her friend Brittany Mahomes following another wave of fan uproar regarding Mahomes’ perceived support for Trump. (A diagram could aid in understanding the intricate web of relationships and rivalries.)
Essentially, Swift’s widespread popularity appears to have instilled a feeling of invincibility to critique – from internet trolls, fans who believe they understand what’s best for her, and conservative supporters who she has been hesitant to offend due to her progressive viewpoints in the past.
It’s ironic that Trump’s overconfidence, or feeling of being invulnerable, ended up causing him to inadvertently promote Swift’s endorsement of Harris, which could be harmful for him.
On Instagram, Swift stated her reason for supporting Harris publicly was due to Trump’s recent use of falsified AI images, which wrongly implied that Harris had endorsed the ex-president.
It stirred up my apprehensions about AI and the risks associated with disseminating false information,” I penned down. “It led me to realize the importance of being completely open about my true intentions regarding this election, as a voter.
Essentially, Trump’s belief that he could use fake photos of Swift (given his past success in getting away with similar actions), led him to a confrontation with an individual who likely has more self-assuredness than he does.
Ponder for a moment, if you haven’t already, on the observation that Taylor Swift’s endorsement post did not show a photo of Kamala Harris, but instead displayed a picture of Taylor herself, even holding her cat.
From my perspective as a passionate film enthusiast, this tale wasn’t just about her devotion to Harris’ political vision. It was also about Taylor Swift reclaiming the reigns of her own storyline, a theme that resonates deeply with me from “The Tortured Poets Department,” as she grapples with and triumphs over personal threats.
Think Trump listened before messing with the wrong megastar?
