EG allows VALORANT team to compete at EWC — but will limit social coverage
At EG, the team is free to explore possibilities within EWC, however, you won’t see any content about the event being shared or promoted across our social media platforms.
As a member of Evil Geniuses’ VALORANT team, I’m thrilled about our organization’s decision to let us participate in the Esports World Cup happening this coming July. However, there’s a condition attached – we’ve got to represent EG at the World Cup! It’s an exciting challenge and I can’t wait to see how we stack up against other top teams from around the globe.
During both the qualifier and the main event, EG won’t feature coverage of their team on social media as a means of expressing dissent towards the event, but they will seize the chance they qualified for by enabling their squad to showcase their performance elsewhere.
“Competitive standpoint only”: EG won’t broadcast anything EWC-related from Riyadh this year
On May 22nd, EG released a statement regarding their participation in the EWC tournament. Following their fourth place finish in Stage 1 of VCT Americas 2025, they have secured a spot in the qualifier for the EWC Americas competition. In this round, they will compete alongside third-seeded MIBR, beginning in the second stage.
The EG VALORANT team isn’t planning to withdraw from the EWC qualification. Their organization emphasized that due to the few chances available in the second-tier competition, their prospects of reaching VCT Champions could significantly diminish if they miss out on the EWC, should they decide not to participate.
EG understands that the choice to compete might not correspond with the core beliefs of its community. Therefore, the organization will permit the team to participate, but they won’t sponsor their journey to the Electronic Sports World Cup (EWC) or their presence in Saudi Arabia if they manage to qualify.
EG encourages enthusiasts tracking our team’s EWC adventure to independently back our players and coaches, as they tirelessly strive to maintain their high-level competition.
Organizations are choosing one among several alternatives due to the criticism faced regarding the EWC incident. Team Liquid recently declared they will sport Pride jerseys representing the LGBTQ+ community during June and July at EWC tournaments, despite same-sex relationships and symbols being illegal in Saudi Arabia.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m choosing to stand aside from the Electronic World Cup (EWC) this year. The recent controversy surrounding GeoGuessr’s participation in the Saudi event has left a bad taste among the gaming community, and I feel it’s important to take a stance. After facing intense criticism, GeoGuessr decided to withdraw their title from the competition. In a statement, GeoGuessr Daniel Antell explained, “When we get feedback suggesting we’ve made a mistake, we listen carefully.” This shows that they value our opinions and are committed to maintaining the integrity of their brand. #StandWithGeoGuessr
