Edwina Bartholomew is determined to complete her luxurious country pub renovation despite shock cancer diagnosis

As I read through this heartfelt story of Edwina Bartholomew, I find myself deeply moved by her resilience and strength. Her journey, from an intern making coffees to a respected presenter on Sunrise, is truly inspiring. But it’s not just her professional achievements that stand out; it’s the way she faces adversity with grace and positivity.

Edwina Bartholomew has shared that she remains committed to finishing her upscale rural inn restoration in the New South Wales countryside, even after receiving a surprising cancer diagnosis.

Despite the emotional revelation of her chronic myeloid leukemia diagnosis made live on Sunrise last Friday, the experienced presenter shared that her project in Carcoar will proceed as planned.

As a committed follower, I’m pushing forward with this remarkable project, overcoming health obstacles along the way, as I shared with realestate.com.au.

I really love spending time in the countryside. It would be delightful to spend a little more quality time with my family, living life at a more relaxed tempo.

This year, it was confirmed that Edwina could proceed with transforming an old, run-down country pub located approximately 251 km from Sydney into a high-end vacation retreat, which had long been her aspiration.

In May 2023, the well-known host of Sunrise television program acquired a historical 177-year-old estate located in Carcoar, NSW. However, this renovation project has faced significant setbacks due to the delays in the heritage-preserved town.

She mentioned that focusing on housework would not only keep her occupied but also provide a distraction from her unsettling cancer prognosis.

Edwina stated, “I’ll cope with this situation and carry on living. The renovation project has served as a delightful diversion, and I expect it will remain so for the upcoming months.

The newly disclosed plans show that the once-known pub, now called Saltash Farm by the owners, will undergo transformation into a beautiful escape destination. This change includes constructing three additional guest cabins, a house, and a main guesthouse.

On a teary Friday morning broadcast, Edwina disclosed that she had recently been diagnosed with cancer.

She shared with Sunrise viewers that she had received a cancer diagnosis. This news has left her feeling stunned and it is difficult for her to express it.

‘This condition is quite beneficial to know about – it’s known as Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. With proper self-care and a daily medication in the form of a pill, it can be effectively managed. By taking good care of myself, I can expect a full recovery.’

After a moment, the longtime television personality found himself choked up, confessing to the crowd, “I honestly believed I could hold it all in.

It was revealed that it was actually Edwina’s colleague, Natalie Barr, who played a significant role in Edwina’s early diagnosis. In June, Natalie herself underwent a skin examination which discovered skin cancer on her nose.

Worried about her personal health, Edwina made an appointment with her physician for a mammography, blood tests, and a skin examination – only to learn some distressing information later on.

Edwina explained, “Following the discovery of some lumps, I underwent a mammogram which showed no issues. Additionally, I got an eye exam and everything was fine. However, my physician also ordered some routine blood tests for me all at once.

Edwina expressed another motivation behind disclosing her unfortunate situation was to inspire others to make their health a top priority too.

She recommended that mothers, who often put others first, should also prioritize their own well-being. Don’t forget to schedule an appointment with your doctor,” she suggested.

Following expressing gratitude towards her superiors at Sunrise, Edwina disclosed to the audience that she plans to take a break in September, and subsequently reduce her workload at Sunrise.

In simpler terms, the ex-co-host of Dancing with the Stars announced that upon her return to Sunrise, she plans to significantly reduce her work commitments, only working for a few days each week.

Although it might seem otherwise, I’m actually quite optimistic about it. In truth, it’s an incredibly unfortunate fortunate event for me, she reassured the audience.

‘I’m just beyond grateful I found it, and beyond grateful it’s the best-case scenario.’

An empathetic Natalie held Edwina’s hand during her announcement.

Initially, I want to express my sincere apologies for any inconvenience you’ve experienced. You mentioned that the treatment has some positive aspects, so could you please elaborate and explain it to us, Natalie suggested.

Edwina gathered her thoughts and shared, “We are incredibly fortunate. In essence, I just need to take a single pill each day. This won’t affect my lifespan at all.

“Right now, I simply must focus on self-care and getting some much-needed rest. It’s truly fortunate that we can do so in this nation, and I’m particularly grateful because of the type of cancer I’ve been diagnosed with.

Additionally, the medication seems to be working great for me thus far, and that’s terrific! I haven’t experienced any adverse effects.

Additionally, I was symptom-free, which is the reason behind my emphasis on the health caution. In simpler terms, I wasn’t feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness.

Edwina continued by explaining that while chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) frequently shows no signs, it can escalate into a severe condition if neglected without treatment.

Edwina first began her career at Sunrise in the mid-2000s after winning an internship there. Over time, she moved up from preparing coffees to creating the program itself.

Initially, she served as a reporter for station 2GB, then she reported on the Beijing Olympics for Channel Seven. Subsequently, she was employed as a reporter at Channel Seven News.

In 2011, she returned to Sunrise, taking up the role of Sydney correspondent. Later, in 2013, she stepped into the shoes of Grant Denyer as the weather presenter.

After three years, Edwina switched from being a weather presenter to sitting in the entertainment presenter’s chair. Additionally, she started regularly filling in for news reporting.

After that, she steadily advanced through the hierarchy, assuming the role of news presenter from Natalie in 2021, following which she took over Samantha Armytage’s position as her co-host.

This March, Edwina took over the hosting role from Jodie Speers on Sunrise Early News (formerly known as Seven Early News).

For several years, the Seven star, her spouse Neil Varcoe, and they have been sharing their lives with their daughter Molly (4) and son Thomas (2).
