Edwina Bartholomew cancer: What is myeloid leukaemia – and how it is diagnosed
As I read through this heartwarming story about Edwina Bartholomew‘s diagnosis and her brave decision to prioritize her health, I find myself deeply moved by the resilience and positivity she exudes. It’s clear that Edwina has been through a lot, but she faces this challenge with an unwavering spirit that is truly inspiring.
Edwina Bartholomew mentioned that apart from feeling a bit tired, there were no clear indications of an upcoming cancer diagnosis for her. She urges everyone in Australia to make their health a priority and schedule regular check-ups.
On the Sunrise show on Friday, the 41-year-old television personality struggled to hold back tears as she disclosed: “I’ve recently learned I have cancer.”
‘Um. That’s a shock to say and hard to say,’ she continued, her voice breaking with emotion.
As a dedicated devotee, I cannot help but express my deep admiration for this remarkable foe known as Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. This relentless adversary has captured my attention and concern, yet, it also offers a glimmer of hope. It’s not just a battle, but a dance with destiny, a duel that can be tamed by a simple daily pill. With self-care as my sword and determination as my shield, I am confident in my ability to conquer this challenge and emerge victorious, standing tall in the face of adversity.
The veteran TV star revealed that she wanted to tell viewers about her July diagnosis because she ‘no symptoms’ beyond simple tiredness and to encourage them to get checked.
‘I also had no symptoms, which is why I wanted to give that health warning at all,’ she said.
Even though I had nothing and felt exhausted since I wake up at 3am, I haven’t experienced any symptoms whatsoever. That’s because chronic myeloid leukemia typically doesn’t show symptoms early on, making it a slow progressing disease. In fact, it’s quite common for patients not to exhibit any warning signs initially.
If I hadn’t made my health a priority, I would be facing a completely different situation.
Untreated, chronic myeloid leukemia – a cancer originating in the blood and bone marrow – can progress into a severe condition.
It turned out that it was Natalie Barr, Edwina’s co-star, who played a crucial role in her prompt diagnosis.
In June, during a regular health examination, her coworker (who was 56 years old) discovered she had skin cancer on her nose following the check-up.
Worried about her personal well-being, Edwina made an appointment with her physician to undergo a mammogram, blood tests, and a skin examination – ultimately receiving distressing information.
‘I had a mammogram after I had a few lumps. That came back all clear. I even had an eye check. That’s fine. But my doctor sent me to get routine blood tests at the same time,’ Edwina continued.
‘One of those tests came back with levels out of whack.
‘I feel very, very lucky and I wanted to share this with you for a couple of reasons.
Initially, since we’ve all shared countless memorable moments together – celebrations, engagements, weddings, and even the arrival of newborns here and at home – it seemed fitting to include you in this special occasion as well.
In a manner quite like your own experiences, where you found yourselves in challenging circumstances, or even tougher ones, and emerged with newfound strength and resilience, that is my intention as well.
Edwina expressed another motivation behind disclosing her unfortunate situation was to inspire others to focus on their own health too.
As a dedicated lifestyle advisor, I’d like to emphasize this: For all you wonderful mothers out there who are consistently caring for others, remember to care for yourself as well. It’s essential that you schedule a visit with your healthcare provider to ensure you’re in the best of health too.
In July, the woman learned about her unexpected health condition in private, revealing it only to a select group of colleagues while maintaining silence about it to the general public.
She expressed gratitude to all her fellow actors for their backing, specifically acknowledging Natalie for consistently reaching out and supplying all the meals.
Edwina acknowledged her colleagues, Monique Wright and Sally Bowrey, as they graciously adjusted their schedules, allowing her to manage her own family responsibilities.
Instead, Edwina expressed gratitude towards her superiors at Sunrise, later disclosed to the audience that she intends to take a break in September, and plans to reduce her commitments at Sunrise.
In simpler terms, the ex-co-host of Dancing with the Stars announced that upon her return to Sunrise, she plans to reduce her work commitments significantly, only working a few days each week.
She conveyed to her audience that although it might seem otherwise, she’s quite optimistic about the situation. In reality, it’s an incredibly unfortunate fortunate event for her.
‘I’m just beyond grateful I found it, and beyond grateful it’s the best-case scenario.’
An empathetic Natalie held Edwina’s hand during her announcement.
Apologies for any inconvenience you’ve experienced, but just as you mentioned, the therapy seems beneficial. Could you walk me through it? I’m eager to learn more about your experience.
Edwina gathered her thoughts and said, “We’ve been incredibly fortunate. I just need to take one pill each day. It won’t affect my lifespan.”
“Right now, it’s important for me to focus on self-care and getting enough rest. It’s incredible fortunate that we live in a country where such resources are available, especially considering the type of cancer I’ve been diagnosed with.”
Additionally, I’ve responded positively to the medication thus far, and that’s terrific news! Notably, I haven’t experienced any side effects yet.
Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington offered encouragement in his unique way, remarking: “Eddie, just as with everything you tackle, you’ve handled this situation with such a positive attitude.”
‘I know it’s a strange thing to say that, but you did. You reached out to us personally. You told us this journey you’re about to go on yourself.’
Edwina’s tearful news soon attracted dozens of messages from well wishers.
‘All of the love and hugs, Eddie – we’re with you,’ wrote The Project’s Georgie Tunny.
‘You got this queen,’ commented TV presenter Jacqueline Felgate
‘Sending so much love Eddy xxx,’ added Erin Holland.
Meanwhile, a Sunrise viewer was devastated by the news.
‘I am still crying. What a shock,’ the fan began.
My 17-year-old boy burst into the room, wondering why I was tears. Son, we adore you. You can handle it, and we’re here for you!
‘Sending much love to you and your immediate and extended family. What an amazing strong woman you are.
“I’ve always felt the same, but you’ve made it even clearer. Many others share this belief too. Take care, Eddie. You are deeply appreciated.”
‘Praying for you and all your family as they support you,’ wrote another.
As per the Mayo Clinic, Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) is a relatively rare form of cancer found within the bone marrow that advances at a sluggish pace.
A range of possible signs may appear, including bone discomfort, tiredness, high temperature, decreased appetite, blurred vision, and loss of weight, in addition to other potential symptoms.
Edwina revealed she suffered very little of these symptoms, with the main being fatigue which she put down to waking up at 3am every morning for work.
Progress in therapy significantly enhances the outlook for individuals with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). In fact, a majority of those diagnosed with this condition may attain remission and enjoy prolonged lifespans.
For over half a decade, her husband Neil Varcoe and she have been a family of four, raising their young daughters Molly (age 4) and Thomas (age 2).
