Eddie Redmayne defends that shocking twist in The Day of the Jackal

As a fan who has been following this thrilling ride since its inception, I must say that The Day of the Jackal is undoubtedly one of the most gripping shows of the year. Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of the elusive Jackal is nothing short of breathtaking, and his recent comments about the finale’s twist have only fueled my anticipation for season 2.

One of the standout Peacock series this year is ‘The Day of the Jackal’, and after its gripping season finale, Eddie Redmayne has been discussing that incredible climactic scene.

Throughout the entire season, anticipation has grown steadily towards the long-awaited confrontation between MI6 agent Bianca (Lashana Lynch) and the enigmatic Jackal (Redmayne). In the thrilling finale of The Day of the Jackal season 1, this much-hyped face-off unfolded with a shocking deviation from the original source material.

Spoilers ahead for The Day of the Jackal season 1 finale!

For those unaware, the TV series Sky and Peacock is derived from Frederick Forsyth’s novel with the same title, which was previously adapted into a 1973 film called The Day of the Jackal. If you’ve watched the movie or read the book, you’re familiar with its conclusion. And it appeared as though The Day of the Jackal series was following that pattern until the very last moments.

In the original story, the Jackal is captured or killed by those chasing him. However, in the new series, it’s a different story! The Jackal actually murders Bianca before escaping to track down his wife, Nuria (Úrsula Corberó), and their child.

In a recent interview with GQ, Redmayne recently shared his thoughts on the finale and the shocking twist:

I expected it since I had been informed prior, but it still shocked me in the film because The Jackal was killed so abruptly and without fanfare. It’s a stark contrast, and there was a version of Roland’s script where this abruptness was present with Bianca as well, but what Anu discovered was that moment which is startling yet also pays tribute to Bianca’s resilience and intelligence after spending ten hours together.

I believe Redmayne is correct in his assessment that the plot twist was well-executed, given it seemed to have been planned this way rather than Bianca killing the Jackal. To me, it seems essential for there to be some dialogue or interaction between Bianca and the Jackal. Their characters appear to have a deep connection, and I think it’s important for the audience to witness that relationship unfold.

Apart from sharing the same sentiment, I believe there’s an unexpected abruptness in their conversation that packs a punch. It seems like Jackal and Bianca are about to delve into the reasons behind their actions, only for the discussion to end abruptly. This sudden closure feels chilly, considering how deeply involved viewers have become with Bianca. However, given the narrative pattern of the season, this twist was somewhat expected. The Jackal has experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but this episode is particularly challenging for him. As we approach the finale, there’s a brief moment when it appears the Jackal might escape justice, but he largely manages to do so throughout the storyline.

Redmayne also touched on how the characters deserved this moment together in the GQ interview.

As a fan, I find it fascinating that moment was nearly our first time working together on set, and yet, our characters were essentially strangers. However, through Bianca’s persistent pursuit, there grows a mutual admiration between us. It’s intriguing to think of us as two sides of the same coin.

Indeed, it was inevitable that the storyline for “The Day of the Jackal” should conclude in this manner. After all, the Jackal can’t meet his end in the climax and then miraculously reappear for a second season, considering that one is already on its way!

In the next phase of our tale, the narrative jumps forward to season 2. As the first season concludes, the Jackal manages to evade the hitmen dispatched by Timothy Winthrop (portrayed by Charles Dance), with the intention of eliminating him. Subsequently, he encounters Zina (Eleanor Matsuura) and reveals that there are some personal matters he needs to settle first, primarily locating his long-lost family, before setting his sights on Timothy and his associates.

In the first season, The Jackal plays both hunter and prey. This dual role could continue into the next season, yet there’s an intuition that he will take bolder steps than before, seeking retribution against those who have harmed him.

Looks like we’re braced for a prolonged anticipation until ‘The Day of the Jackal’ season 2 arrives. Rest assured, we’ll keep you posted with any fresh news regarding the upcoming season. It is confirmed that Redmayne will reprise his role as the Jackal in season 2, and most of the key characters are expected to make a comeback for the second installment of the show.

Stay tuned!
