Eddie Murphy’s Candy Cane Lane Is a Hit on Prime Video 2 Years Later

The holiday movie Candy Cane Lane is now gaining popularity on streaming services after not initially finding a large audience in theaters.

I’m so excited to see Eddie Murphy’s Candy Cane Lane is already climbing the charts on Amazon Prime Video! According to Flix Patrol, it’s currently number seven among the most-watched movies in the US, and it’s beating out other holiday favorites like White Christmas and The Family Stone. I think this movie is going to be a huge hit this season!

The movie, directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Kelly Younger, centers around Chris, a marketing professional with a deep love for Christmas. He meticulously hand-makes his own holiday decorations and, after losing his job, decides to fully commit to winning the annual neighborhood decorating contest. However, he faces stiff competition from his neighbor, Bruce (played by Ken Marino), who consistently wins with store-bought, inflatable decorations.

Chris visits a strange shop called Kringle’s looking for holiday decorations and accidentally makes a dangerous deal with Pepper, a mischievous elf played by Jillian Bell. This sets off a frantic adventure where Chris, with help from his family and even Santa, must find the five golden rings from the classic Christmas song before Christmas Eve is over and Pepper’s plan succeeds.

The main cast of Candy Cane Lane includes Tracee Ellis Ross as Chris’s wife, Carol, and their children, played by Thaddeus J. Mixson (Nick), and Madison Thomas (Holly), with Joy rounding out the family. Nick Offerman, Chris Redd, and Robin Thede also star as people who were previously tormented by Pepper: Pip, Lamplighter Gary, and Cordelia.

Okay, so I was really excited for Candy Cane Lane, but honestly, it didn’t quite hit the mark with most people. Critics and regular viewers like me seemed pretty lukewarm on it. As of today, it’s sitting at a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and surprisingly, audiences agree – it’s at 45% there too, based on over 500 user reviews and 71 critic reviews!

What’s Next for Eddie Murphy in Film?

In July, Eddie Murphy announced he would be taking on the role of Inspector Clouseau, a character famously played by Peter Sellers in the original movies and Steve Martin in the 2006 remake and its 2009 follow-up. When asked if he would also use a French accent for the part, Murphy simply said, “Maybe.”

Murphy stated the man is likely French, though he could also be from Haiti. He confirmed the man is Black.

Candy Cane Lane is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
