Eddie Murphy lifted the lid on one of the most surprising encounters of his early fame.

In a new Netflix documentary called Being Eddie, the actor revealed that Yul Brynner, a famous Hollywood star, made a pass at him on his 21st birthday.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard this story! Apparently, the comedian, who’s 64 now, claims this huge Oscar-winning actor actually came up to him with a really surprising proposal while he was ringing in his big birthday at the famous Studio 54. It’s just wild!

Murphy remembered his 21st birthday party at Studio 54, sharing a surprising encounter with Yul Brynner. Brynner, with his wife, invited Murphy to return to their apartment to continue the party. Murphy politely declined, and later realized Brynner’s wife seemed amused by the invitation, leading him to wonder if Brynner had ulterior motives.

Murphy quipped that the story could have turned into a wild tale if he’d agreed to their idea.

I’ve heard him say, with a really dark sense of humor, that the story could’ve had a much better ending. He’d joke about how it would’ve gone something like, ‘Yeah, I went back to Yul Brynner’s place and, well, I slept with his wife, and he just stood there watching, repeating ‘Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!” It’s a shocking thing to say, but it really captures his cynical perspective.

Brynner died just three years later, in 1985, following a battle with lung cancer.

Yul Brynner had been married four times throughout his life, but he wasn’t married in 1982, when his daughter, Murphy, turned 21. This makes it uncertain who Murphy was talking about when she mentioned a marriage.

In the documentary, Eddie Murphy, now married to Paige Butcher, shares his experiences with fatherhood. He discusses how raising his ten children helped him grow from a young actor focused on himself into a more stable and family-oriented person.

He explained that his children are the most important thing in his life. He said that having kids completely changes your focus – it shifts from being all about yourself to being all about them. He used to push himself to exhaustion, staying up for days, but since meeting his wife, Paige Butcher, he’s adopted a more relaxed routine. Now, they enjoy watching a couple of episodes of Seinfeld before going to bed.

Eddie Murphy has ten children: Eric (35) with Paulette McNeely, Bria (35), Myles (32), Shayne (30), Zola (25), and Bella (23) with Nicole Murphy, Christian (34) with Tamara Hood, and Izzy and Max with his current wife, Paige.

Murphy has often faced public attention regarding his personal life, especially due to his previously difficult relationship with Mel B from the Spice Girls.

The former couple shares Angel, now 18, who is living as a trans man.

Eddie Murphy and Mel B had a difficult relationship for years because he doubted he was the father of their daughter, Angel. However, they’ve recently become much better at co-parenting.

Mel, 50, told Us Weekly that Angel and Eddie enjoy spending time together, even going on vacation as a family. He described Eddie as a dedicated father to his ten children.

Looking back on her life, she explained that her previous marriage to Stephen Belafonte, which she has described as abusive—claims he disputes—created challenges in building a stable relationship with Murphy at first.

Mel, who is now married to hairstylist Rory McPhee, says she and her ex-husband Murphy have both become much better parents over time.

‘Bit by bit,’ she said, their friendship has ‘flourished even more’ as their son has grown up.

He and his girlfriend traveled to Japan last year, and he really connected with the culture – he actually speaks Japanese fluently! Mel and Murphy first met at a party at the actor’s Beverly Hills mansion in 2006. 

Mel said Murphy had organized a big dinner party just to get to know her, and when their eyes met, she felt an immediate, intense connection that startled her.

Their whirlwind romance, however, collapsed after she became pregnant.

Mel ran to Leeds, expecting Murphy to come after her, but he unexpectedly announced on television that he wanted a paternity test.

In a 2019 interview with Piers Morgan, she revealed that Eddie still regrets his hurtful words to this day. She explained that they had planned the pregnancy together, were deeply in love, and the relationship ended very badly.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always understood Mel’s side of things – they’ve consistently shared with me that their relationship was much deeper and lasted far longer than what the media has shown. It was more significant than people realize, and they’ve been wanting to set the record straight about that for a while now.

In her 2018 memoir, Brutally Honest, she revealed that she and Eddie Murphy were incredibly close—so much so that they actually got tattoos of each other’s signatures on their thighs.

She described their connection as unique and unlike anything she’d experienced before. She said his love was genuine and that he was her soulmate, teaching her the meaning of true love.

Mel remembered Murphy loved to watch Elvis movies and comedies like Blazing Saddles. He also shared stories about growing up in New York City, including how he and his brother Charlie were sometimes raised in foster care while their mother was sick.

‘He was fascinating to me,’ she wrote. ‘He’d had a life I couldn’t imagine.’
