Eddie Brock’s Other Original Sin Has Been Revealed

Marvel Comics is unveiling Eddie Brock’s original sin, and it is absolutely heartbreaking.

A sneak peek at “Venom: Original Sin” #1 from Marvel Comics places readers in the thick of things during the 80s, when Eddie Brock was striving as a tenacious journalist ready to bend most rules for fame. In this instance, his rule-breaking involves obtaining advance notice about an impending attack by the malevolent Jason Macendale Jr., also known as Jack O’Lantern. While Jack O’Lantern seeks an effortless payday, Eddie dreams that exposing the villain’s new scheme could ignite his career – unless Spider-Man manages to get there first.

Venom: Original Sin offers a fresh twist on Marvel Comics’ throwback series, deviating from the norm of revisiting classic eras as seen in titles like 2022’s Venom: Lethal Protector by David Michelinie and Ivan Fiorelli. Instead, this series presents a Venom who has already lived through all those events before. In the official synopsis for the first issue of Venom: Original Sin, Marvel Comics explains that “Eddie Brock gained control over all symbiotes across space and time, becoming the King in Black! It’s understandable he’d want to use this power to return to a time when Peter Parker wore the symbiote and correct a regrettable moment from his past. However, even small changes can cause devastating effects… and Eddie must use his immense power to rectify the mistakes he’s made.

Initially introduced in issue #18 of ‘Web of Spider-Man’, penned by David Michelinie and Marc Silvestri in 1986, Eddie Brock was a character whose origins were deeply rooted in a tumultuous childhood. Despite his natural talents, he grappled with financial struggles while working as a journalist for the Daily Globe. His relentless pursuit of success often led him to compromise ethics, and when an interview he conducted with Emil Gregg, who claimed to be the Devil, was exposed as false, it tarnished his reputation as a reporter. This unfortunate turn of events fueled a deep-seated animosity towards Spider-Man, who had exposed the truth.

Since that time, Eddie has transformed from an unquestionable villain, then an unexpected anti-hero, to the actual deity among all symbiotes as the King in Black. Lately, his life has experienced a significant shift due to his unique situation. Although Eddie and Carnage have been adversaries for decades, they were compelled to form a partnership to avoid their own demises following the events of Marvel Comics’ “Venom War” crossover event. Now, Eddie is exerting every effort to curb Carnage’s violent tendencies, while simultaneously seeking a way to part from his current symbiote without sacrificing his own life in the process.

Venom: Original Sin #1 goes on sale May 28 from Marvel Comics.
