Ed Sheeran’s Tear-Jerking New Video for “Old Phone” Honors Fans and Lost Friends

In a touching tribute to his devoted fans, Ed Sheeran subtly acknowledged them in the moving music video of his newest chart-topper, “Old Phone.

In a recent release, the 34-year-old vocalist incorporated their loyal fans into the music video by inviting them to contribute their nostalgic moments captured on their mobile devices.

In order to publicize the latest tune, Ed made a stopover at his hometown, along with Ipswich, Massachusetts, USA, for a single performance.

On Thursday, a video emerged that showcases American fans recalling heartfelt memories of deceased loved ones, such as Ed discovering messages from his lost friends on his ancient phone.

In the beginning of the video, Ed shares the story behind the song, taking a nostalgic journey back to the discovery of an old phone, uncovering text messages and pictures that stirred sweet yet poignant memories of people who are now gone.

‘I sing about talking to deceased friends, texting former lovers, and I wonder if perhaps these should’ve stayed in the past. I feel a deep sadness, especially for those friends I no longer have.’

Towards the conclusion, Ed plays a heartfelt concert for his fans at the Old Phone Pub, a venue that he constructed himself.

Last week, Ed posted a string of nostalgic photos on Instagram, among them a lively selfie with Taylor Swift. At the same time, he pondered over the outcome of his recent copyright case.

The star launched a new Instagram account to celebrate his ’emotional’ new single Old Phone.

This account showcased unique photographs, text excerpts, and lyrics, all previously unpublished, and was released prior to the debut of his upcoming single on Thursday, April 29th.

Ed drew inspiration for his fresh composition while going through his old cellphone, during the process of a copyright dispute regarding his popular hit, Thinking Out Loud.

Initially, Ed refuted allegations that he plagiarized Marvin Gaye’s iconic soul track “Let’s Get It On” for his 2014 hit single. Later, in 2023, the courts found him not guilty of this charge.

In his latest Instagram update, Ed shared an insight about his lifestyle change: “Turn up the volume and give it a listen! I abandoned my smartphone back in 2015 and switched to emails completely. Since December ’15, my phone has been off and I’ve been living this way ever since.

When a lawsuit was filed against me, the court mandated that I hand over my previous devices to the opposing counsel for examination, in search of any messages, emails, voice notes, videos, or other relevant data that could bolster their argument. As part of this process, I accidentally activated my old phone.

Here are three messages I received: One came from my late friend Jamal Edwards, another from an ex-girlfriend I hadn’t spoken to in years, and the last one was from a relative I haven’t connected with in over a decade. Each message represented a reconnection of sorts.

Ed posted photos to his friends which featured both Taylor and the recently departed Jamal Edwards. Looking at those images stirred up a range of emotions in him.

Ed went on to say, “It seemed like a time capsule, capturing the era of my life during 2015. As soon as I turned it on, I was taken aback, finding myself reading old messages and chats with individuals who are now absent.

Reflecting upon messages from deceased friends I can no longer converse with, I unexpectedly find myself shedding tears. Old pictures resurface of times spent closely with individuals who are now out of my life. We seem to have drifted apart over time.

Experiencing it was an incredibly emotional rollercoaster ride. At 2am, while still reeling from jet lag in India, I composed the song ‘Old Phone’ by myself. That same morning, I recorded it. It carries a sense of belonging on my debut album, yet it is a piece that I wouldn’t have been able to create until I faced and lived through real-life situations.

When discussing the impactful new tune, Ed commented: “I get emotional performing it; I hope it stirs emotions in you as well.

Perhaps you might consider turning on your old device to reminisce about a decade past as well. Regardless of its impact, I’m happy I penned this down. The old phone will be released this coming Thursday at 11 am EDT / 4 pm BST.
