Ed Sheeran stuns Cardiff school children with surprise performance in their assembly
On Friday morning, the students at a particular school were astonished by an unexpected concert given by none other than Ed Sheeran during their school gathering.
33-year-old musician astonished both students and faculty at Fitzalan High School in Cardiff by unexpectedly appearing on stage and singing his popular tunes.
Ed Sheeran unexpectedly unveiled the establishment of his foundation, The Ed Sheeran Foundation, designed to enhance musical opportunities for over 12,000 children and youth.
The artist who creates hits sang “Thinking Out Loud” and “Shape Of You”, followed by addressing some questions posed by the kids.
In the United Kingdom, music education encounters considerable obstacles due to diverse requirements among different geographic areas, educational institutions, and student demographics.
In 2024, the British music sector reached an unprecedented high of £7.6 billion in economic contributions, yet there are ongoing issues concerning equitable access to music education.
2019 data from a BPI survey indicated that approximately 25% of educational institutions catering to underprivileged areas do not provide any music instruction whatsoever.
As a lifestyle expert, I am thrilled to share that when my foundation was established, it immediately began supporting 18 local music education organizations and state school music departments throughout the United Kingdom.
Providing this support will significantly enhance the experiences of 12,000 children and youth by expanding instrument availability, offering performance platforms, and paving routes towards careers in the music industry.
In a heartfelt Instagram message, complete with an inspiring video, Ed delved deeper into the significance of his latest project, sharing insights on why it holds such personal value for him, as he engaged with school students about the profound impact of music.
He wrote in the caption: ‘I established @edsheeranfnd as there seems to be a decreasing value placed on musical education lately.’
Regardless of being in school, it was often viewed as an unimportant subject and not given its due respect. There’s a common misunderstanding that it doesn’t constitute a genuine career – however, the music industry generates employment opportunities for around 216,000 people across various sectors and contributes approximately £7.6 billion to the UK economy annually.
It’s worth noting the global impact our art holds in spreading happiness. We should take pride in this achievement and strive to showcase it more prominently within the UK, rather than downplaying its significance and acting as if we’re only financiers (no disrespect intended to financiers).
He went on to explain: ‘It significantly benefited my mental well-being during my childhood, having a sense of purpose and accomplishment, even when I was still learning the piano or cello long before I started composing songs.’
I’d like to create an environment where children can acquire skills on musical instruments, master production and songwriting, perform, and benefit from apprenticeship programs that teach a variety of industry-related abilities.
I manage a team of approximately 150 individuals involved in various aspects of the music industry, ranging from performers with diverse skill sets to labels, managers, publishers, and promoters. The world of music plays a vital role in shaping our societal fabric.
As I traverse various destinations and engage with educational institutions and community initiatives at their roots, I’m continually struck by the abundance of passionate, inspiring individuals who are often overlooked and undersupported.
The celebrity concluded with: ‘I’m praying that this initiative will offer them the necessary assistance to persevere, and demonstrate how valuable they are to us. Further details forthcoming, lots of affection x.’
Beyond offering practical assistance, this foundation also promotes a wider acknowledgement of the life-changing impact that music can have on young individuals, as well as the vital importance of skilled music educators.
A new study from the Cultural Learning Alliance shows a significant drop of 56% in music teachers being hired since 2011, emphasizing the immediate need for reform within our current system.
Ed kicked off the foundation’s thrilling debut by meeting young individuals, educators, and youth facilitators in Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, and Belfast.
As a music enthusiast, I can wholeheartedly attest that my musical journey has molded my identity in profound ways. There’s an undeniable joy that comes with creating melodies, and those moments have left indelible memories in my heart.
As a passionate advocate for nurturing talent, I recently had the pleasure of exploring Sound Progression, a vibrant community organization based in Cardiff. With the generous backing of our foundation, this remarkable group provides weekly music instruction and personal guidance to young individuals.
According to Paul Lyons, the founder, who also doubles as a disc jockey and music producer, these young individuals hailing from different walks of life within Cardiff have a shared enthusiasm for producing music spanning numerous genres, including Afrobeats and Indie.
Our weekend workshops provide secure, welcoming environments that foster community connections. Without extra funding, however, we may have to give up these vital spaces, along with the exceptional skills they cultivate.”
The revised sentence maintains the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language. It also breaks down the information into two clear ideas (providing safe, inclusive spaces; risk of losing them) for better clarity and readability.
In Coventry, the foundation is collaborating with Coventry Alternative Provision Academy and Coventry Music on providing studio facilities.
Alternative schools, such as AP Academies, cater to youth who have been excluded from regular schools or require specialized educational environments due to unique learning needs.
Glenn Mellor, head teacher, highlighted the impact: ‘Music is so important for our young people.
Owning this studio empowers them, making them feel capable of pushing beyond their current limitations and realizing greater success in their aspirations and professional journeys.
