Ed Sheeran Shocks Ipswich with Surprise Gig and Pub Rename for New Song Old Phone
Over the bank holiday weekend, I was absolutely thrilled to unexpectedly attend a gig by none other than my beloved Ed Sheeran, right in his native Suffolk! It was an unforgettable experience that I’ll cherish forever.
34-year-old musician unveiled his latest track titled “Old Phone” and renamed a venue in Ipswich’s town center as “The Thomas Wolsey,” inspired by the song’s title.
For the past two weeks, the pub has been under new management using a different name. After that, it will go back to its original name.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that Ed, famous for his spontaneous performances, posted snippets from last night’s concert on his Instagram. In the caption, he wrote: ‘I used my old phone to bring the vibe of a homecoming show in Ipswich today.’
Appreciation to @fishclawband for joining forces with me, and a big thank you to everyone who attended. Catch you all on the next one! 📱
Or simply:
Thanks to @fishclawband for teaming up with me, and a shout-out to those who showed up. See you soon! 📞
The work of renaming the pub, which shares a name with the latest hit single, began at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning.

On a Friday, he made public that there will be three performances taking place in Ipswich, England. Sharing on social media, he wrote: ‘Traveling from Ipswich, Massachusetts to Ipswich, United Kingdom… we’re returning The Old Phone pub this weekend.’
People were asked to respond to the message with a beer emoji for a chance to get invited.
Previously, he’s run short-term installments of “The Old Phone” in Ipswich, Massachusetts (USA), as well as a temporary event at the Coachella festival in California just last month.
Last week, I couldn’t help but feel all nostalgic when Ed shared a blast from the past on Instagram – a groovy selfie with none other than Taylor Swift! As if that wasn’t enough to send my heart racing, he also took a moment to ponder over his recent copyright trial. It was like reliving a piece of our shared pop culture history all over again!
The star launched a new Instagram account to celebrate his ’emotional’ new single Old Phone.
This account showcased numerous unique images, messages, and lyrics, all of which preceded the launch of his upcoming single on April 29.
Ed found inspiration for his fresh composition while going through his old phone, a process triggered by the ongoing copyright dispute concerning his popular hit, Thinking Out Loud.
Initially, Ed asserted that he hadn’t copied Marvin Gaye’s iconic soul track “Let’s Get it On” for his 2014 hit single. Later, in 2023, a court found him not guilty of the allegation.

In a recent Instagram update, Ed shared his thoughts by saying: “Turn up the volume and give it a listen. I gave up my cellphone in 2015 and switched to emails exclusively. Since December of ’15, I haven’t turned my phone back on.
When a lawsuit was filed against me, the court mandated that I hand over my older electronic devices to the opposing counsel for thorough examination of messages, emails, voice notes, videos, and so forth, in search of evidence beneficial to their argument. As a result, I accidentally activated my old phone during this process.
Here are the messages I received:
1. The initial message was from my late friend Jamal Edwards.
2. The second message came from an ex-girlfriend I hadn’t interacted with for years.
3. The third message was from a family member I haven’t spoken to in over ten years.
4. And so forth…
Ed posted photos to his friends that included both Taylor and the recently deceased Jamal Edwards. Looking at these images stirred up various emotions within him.
Ed went on to say: “It seemed like a time capsule, capturing the phase of life I was in during 2015. Hitting the power button sent me reeling, as I sifted through messages and chats with folks who are now absent.
Reflecting on old messages from friends who have passed away, it stirs emotions within me as I realize I can no longer converse with them. Old photographs bring back memories of dear companions I used to be very close to, though our connection has faded over time.
Experiencing it was an intensely emotional odyssey. I penned the track “Old Phone” solo during the wee hours of 2am, while still dealing with jet lag in India, wrapping up my album. I recorded it that same morning. It has a profound resonance as if it should’ve been part of my initial album release, yet a song I couldn’t have composed until I faced genuine life events.

Regarding the profound track he created, Ed commented: “Singing this song stirs up emotions in me, and I hope it moves you as well. Perhaps it will prompt you to dust off your old phone and reminisce about where you were a decade ago. Whatever its effect may be, I’m grateful for having written it. The old song will be released on Thursday at 11am EDT / 4pm BST.
It came after Ed surprised Londoners with a lunchtime performance outside of King’s Cross station.
As I graced the stage, I donned a radiant hot-pink tee, standing before an impressive canvas of a colossal pink heart adorned with my latest tune’s title, “Azizam,” emblazoned in crisp white letters.
Audience members rejoiced as Edward serenaded them with his acoustic guitar, performing popular tunes like “Shape of You,” “Perfect,” and “Bad Habits.
