Ed Sheeran Posts Emotional Throwback With Taylor Swift and Teases New Single After Copyright Trial

Ed Sheeran recently posted a string of nostalgic photos on Instagram, featuring a playful selfie with Taylor Swift, as well as musing about his recent copyright case.

The 34-year-old vocalist recently set up a fresh Instagram page to mark the release of his heartfelt new track titled “Old Phone.

This account showcases unique photos, writings, and lyrics, as well as previewing his upcoming single set to drop on Thursday, April 29th.

During the process of a copyright dispute regarding his popular hit, Thinking Out Loud, Ed found inspiration to compose a new tune as he went through his old mobile device.

Initially, Ed claimed innocence when accused of copying Marvin Gaye’s iconic song “Let’s Get it On” for his 2014 hit single. Later on, in the year 2023, a court ruled in his favor, exonerating him from these charges.

In his latest Instagram update, Ed shares an insight: ‘Switch on the audio and give it a listen. Since 2015, I’ve abandoned my smartphone and embraced emails wholeheartedly. I deactivated my phone in December ’15, and that marked the end of it.’

Upon facing a lawsuit, the court mandated that I hand over my previous electronic devices to the opposing counsel for scrutiny, with the aim of discovering any relevant messages, emails, voice recordings, videos, and so forth, potentially beneficial for their case. During this process, I accidentally activated my old phone.

Here are the messages I received:

1. The first one came from my old friend Jamal Edwards, who sadly passed away recently.
2. The second one was from an ex-girlfriend with whom I’ve been out of touch for years.
3. The third message was from a relative I haven’t spoken to in over a decade.
4. And so on… (implying that the pattern continues)

As a devoted follower, I myself have been privileged to see some heartwarming photos that my friend Ed has recently shared – featuring none other than Taylor and our beloved Jamal Edwards. Gazing at these images stirred up a mix of emotions within me due to their profound significance.

Ed went on to say, “It seemed like a time capsule, capturing the period of my life back in 2015, as if I were reliving it when I turned it on. Flipping through the messages and chats made me feel disoriented, interacting with people who are no longer among us.

I stumbled upon messages from deceased friends that left me in tears, knowing I can never converse with them again. I also came across old photographs featuring individuals who were once very dear to me, yet we’ve drifted apart over time.

The whole ordeal was a deeply emotional rollercoaster. I penned the tune “Old Phone” solo during the early hours of 2am, while battling jet lag in India and wrapping up my album. It seems like a track that should have been part of my initial album release, yet also one I couldn’t have composed until I went through some genuine life events myself.

Regarding the poignant new tune, Ed commented: ‘Singing it stirs my feelings, I pray it touches yours as well. Perhaps it prompts you to dust off your old phone and reminisce about where you were a decade ago. Whatever effect it has, I’m grateful I composed it. The Old Phone will be out this Thursday at 11am EDT / 4pm BST.’

It comes after Ed surprised Londoners with a lunchtime performance outside of King’s Cross station.

The performer stood before a big, pink heart adorned with the title “Azizam” in white, which was the name of his latest tune, wearing a bright pink t-shirt while preparing to sing.

Enthusiasts rejoiced as Ed strummed his acoustic guitar and sang popular tracks such as Shape of You, Perfect, and Bad Habits.

After spending the morning with various promotional activities for the singer, he ventured throughout the city’s capital, using a colorful, two-level bus (pink in this case), to mark the approaching release of his eighth studio album.

On more than one occasion, Ed has caught commuters off guard by giving spontaneous performances at train stations.

In November, Ed surprised many people as he emerged from a large setup of Sky Broadband at the train station.

Previously in the day, it came out that Ed needed to discuss a somewhat uncomfortable topic with Elton John – their 15-year acquaintance had led to repeated mispronunciations of his name by Ed.

On the same day, Ed had a chat with Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Sian Welby from Capital Breakfast about his freshly-released single “Azizam” and his forthcoming eighth studio album.

In the recent chat, hosts were curious about my views regarding Elton’s occasional mispronunciation of my name, and they showcased a clip where he did just that. As a lifestyle expert, I find it amusing yet endearing how our names can sometimes create a charming twist in conversations!

Starting the discussion, Chris brought up: “I simply must inquire about this, don’t you think? It so happens that we visited Elton John’s residence this past week… There’s a matter we need to clear up. Let me play something for your ears.

Next, he shared a segment from a Capital interview featuring Elton John, who mentioned, “What I find fascinating about Ed Sheeran is him performing in people’s living rooms.

Ed chuckled and confessed that he recently had a somewhat embarrassing chat with the renowned musician to clarify the correct way to say his name.

In my own words, let me share a personal experience: “For fifteen long years, I’ve had the uncomfortable chat with him, something like ‘We go way back, but you’re not Ed Sheeran,’ and it’s one of those things. Yes, I have indeed engaged in that conversation.

Chris said, “It’s tough to dispute him, isn’t it?” To this, Ed responded, “I can challenge him, I do challenge him, but I find it rather pleasant…

Later on, Jordan remarked: ‘It’s somewhat similar to when your grandmother makes a mistake in what she says, and you understand that she meant something else, don’t you?’ or ‘Afterward, Jordan commented: ‘It’s much like when grandma speaks incorrectly, and we know she meant something different, but we just have to go along with it, right?’

Ed Sheeran acknowledged that he would forever be known as such to Elton John, saying, “Just as my parents never call me ‘Ed,’ only ‘Edward,’ so too will Elton John always refer to me as ‘Ed Sheeran.’

In other parts of the interview, Ed disclosed the name of his upcoming single and mentioned his intention to unveil a fresh track each month, leading up to the release of his full album.

Discussing Azizam and his upcoming album, Ed mentioned that fans can anticipate more of the familiar, yet playful sound. He also hinted that the next single would lean towards a more traditional style from him.

He went on to explain: “It seems it’s a mix of melancholic, soft, and uplifting tones. The track is titled ‘Old Phone’, due for release in about a month’s time. To put it simply, I plan to release a song nearly every month until the album drops.

This year, the acclaimed record producer will unveil his eighth studio album titled “Play,” and on April 4th, he debuted its lead single, “Azizam.

Although Ed hasn’t specified an exact launch date, he has confirmed that the “Play” album is scheduled for release some time in the year 2025.
