Ed Sheeran has revealed that despite achieving early success and topping the charts, he struggled with unhappiness for many years.
Oh my gosh, you guys, did you *hear* his new album, ‘Play’? It’s incredible! Seriously, he’s only 34, and this is his *eighth* studio album – he’s like, a songwriting genius of our time, honestly. But it’s so sad, you know? All this amazing success… it’s clearly been really hard on him personally. I just wish he could have it all without sacrificing his happiness.
Honestly, looking back at the first ten years of his career, it breaks my heart to think about how unhappy he was. He was just completely consumed by work – it was *all* he did. He’s talked about it, and it sounds like he had absolutely no balance in his life, just non-stop work, work, work. It’s awful to think about, but he’s so much happier now!
It was incredibly successful, but that success came at the cost of my personal life – I had no time for anything else.
Ed admitted he prioritised work ahead of relationships, family or friends.
He explained that achieving that level of success in your twenties requires complete dedication, constantly, and that it’s something you can’t maintain indefinitely without it taking a toll on your mental health.

The singer shared that he used to work incredibly long days – up to 16 hours – when he was first starting his career. Now, he’s slowed down and is prioritizing his family, enjoying his roles as a husband and father.
I’ve been following Ed Sheeran for years, and it was so lovely to hear he married Cherry Seaborn back in 2019! They’re a really sweet couple and have two adorable kids, Lyra, who’s five, and Jupiter, who’s three. What I really admire about them is how they keep their family life private – they seem like genuinely down-to-earth people who just want to protect their little ones.
I was really fascinated to hear Ed share a bit about his life with Cherry this week! He unexpectedly opened up to fans at an event in London about the honest, real challenges they face as a couple – the kind every marriage has, really. It was lovely to see him being so open and relatable.
During a recent Spotify Q&A, he emphasized the importance of honesty when discussing the natural highs and lows of any relationship.
He pointed out that Cherry understands he doesn’t shy away from difficult topics in his writing – he explores everything, both the positive and the negative. While he’s known for songs like ‘Perfect,’ he also writes about genuine struggles and disagreements.
‘That’s part of any relationship, and I think it’s important to be honest about it.’
He also reflected on how he is now more family and friends focused rather than all about work.
When I started out, I focused entirely on my career and had no time for a personal life. Now, my family is my priority – they take up about 70% of my time, with music making up the other 30%. I’ve realized that finding balance isn’t just good for your well-being, it’s actually key to achieving success.

Thinking about all the time I’ve spent with my family and friends, I just want to remember feeling truly present and savoring every single moment. Those were good days, and I really lived them to the fullest.
He also said one of his new songs is written for Cherry.
I was really touched by a story Cherry shared – apparently Bono once missed his wife’s birthday but made it up to her with a beautiful, heartfelt song. It got me thinking, and I decided to do something similar for my wife – I wanted to give her a truly personal gift, so I had a song written just for her!
‘It’s a personal moment that exists only for her.’
