EastEnders Shocker: Angie Watts Returns After 37 Years for Epic Anniversary Cameo!

On Wednesday, the EastEnders audience was taken aback when Anita Dobson unexpectedly reappeared as the legendary character Angie Watts in the soap opera’s special commemorative episode.

In 1985, the actress, aged 75 at the time, portrayed the initial landlady of the Queen Victoria pub in the series’ debut episode. She continued in this role for three years before deciding to leave the show.

To mark the soap’s 40th anniversary, she appeared for a short time in the hour-long special, sharing a poignant moment with her on-screen daughter Sharon, which was 37 years since she last portrayed the famous character.

In 2002, Anita’s fictional character Angie met an untimely end due to alcohol poisoning off-stage, but she later reappeared as a vision to her on-screen daughter Sharon, portrayed by Letitia Dean.

In a heart-wrenching moment, Angie went to see Sharon, pleading with her to cry out for assistance as she was pinned beneath a collapsed set of stairs.

In the touching moment, Angie appeared timeless, with her distinctive brown curls and vibrant red lipstick still gracefully adorning her.

In the emotional scene, it was as if time had stood still for Angie, who maintained her classic look with her iconic brown curls and bold red lipstick.

Lastly:
The heartfelt moment showcased an ageless Angie, sporting her signature brown curls and striking red lipstick, just as we remember her.

She addressed her hurt daughter, “Aren’t you abandoning us, Sharon, my dear? It’s wonderful to see you again. I’ve yearned for your presence so dearly.

I’d really love to embrace you warmly right now, but our moment together hasn’t come yet, my dear.

Sharon confessed that she was terrified, and her mother responded with a comforting remark: “Aren’t we all afraid sometimes? After all, I’ve been scared most of my life too. Yet, it’s important for you to keep pressing on, Sharon.

In a more relaxed phrasing, Sharon, appearing frail, admitted, “I truly feel dependent on you,” which made Angie’s eyes well up as she responded, “Oh, no, it’s not me you depend upon. I’ve been keeping an eye on you from afar, and let me assure you, you’re managing quite well all by yourself.

Then she earnestly requested of her daughter, “However, you need to find strength for me now, Sharon, if you can. Can you see what I mean? You have many years ahead. Let them not be squandered. Let them not be wasted, like I have.

Hang in there, I implore you! We never quit, right? After all, we’re fighters, Sharon. Let your voice ring out now, and shout for assistance if needed.

As Sharon started shouting for assistance, Angie smiled tearfully and sobbed: “Carry on, Sharon, carry on! Louder! You’re doing great! Keep going. That’s right, you’re strong just like I know you are.” Then she disappeared from sight.

Home viewers erupted in amazement at the unexpected appearance, flooding social media to confess being “deeply affected” and experiencing a surge of emotions, including goosebumps, upon seeing Angie return. They hailed this as the “standout television moment of the year.

I never thought we’d see her again, not even for an instant, and that outfit she wore on her first formal occasion! After such a long time, Angie Watts has come back home!!!

I couldn’t believe it when we saw her after all these years, especially dressed up for the first time. Guess who returned to us? None other than Angie Watts herself!

For the first time since 1989, Angie Watts appears on the credits of EastEnders, joining other ’90s icons. It was a truly heart-stirring experience that sent shivers down my spine; undeniably one of this year’s most memorable TV moments for EastEnders fans.

Discussing Angie Watts’ comeback following many years, EastEnders producer Chris Clenshaw stated, “Without a doubt, Angie Watts stands among EastEnders’ strongest and most memorable innkeepers.

From the outset, Anita’s character captivated audiences right away, playing a pivotal role in making ‘EastEnders’ the series we know today. Moreover, her influence extends beyond this specific show, significantly shaping the landscape of British television as well.

It was a delightful surprise and perfect for our special anniversary plans when Anita agreed to be on our dream list. Thus, her affirmation turned out to be the most wonderful birthday gift we could have asked for.

Today, as Angie Watts walks through The Queen Victoria, exactly forty years since her debut in Walford, marks a day etched forever in our memories, as we join together to honor this series that has significantly shaped British television. Happy Birthday, EastEnders!

Although Anita had put in great effort to conceal her upcoming return, she eventually shared this with her husband, Brian May, who is a renowned rock musician and the Queen’s lead guitarist.

She explained: ‘I did tell Brian, but I haven’t shared this with anyone else! It’s been tough because lots of people I’m very close to have asked me if I was returning, as I went back to work on the documentary. So, it’s been difficult not to reveal anything.’

However, I’ve been very careful not to reveal anything, as I didn’t want to ruin the surprise for anyone!” or “I’ve been on my best behavior and held back, so as not to give away any secrets.

As she excitedly discussed working together with Letitia once more, likening it to “slipping back into a comfortably warm bath,” she openly shared that their reunion was the primary factor motivating her decision to come back.

She expressed: ‘It was simply wonderful. That’s what ultimately convinced me. When they first inquired if I would return during the documentary filming, I hadn’t given much thought to the overall scenario at the start. But when they mentioned that Letitia had requested my presence as well, I felt a surge and thought, “Oh my goodness, I can’t refuse the chance to see my child again.”‘

The experience was deeply moving, filled with heartwarming emotions. Reuniting felt effortless and smooth.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I found myself in a delightful interaction without much premeditation. It was spontaneous yet enchanting. The woman I encountered was an exquisite individual, both inside and out, who effortlessly showcased her charm as a captivating actress.

In 1988, Anita said her farewell to Walford. Her departure was a noteworthy event that captivated an audience of 30 million viewers. The iconic moment being referenced is when her character’s husband, Dirty Den (portrayed by Leslie Grantham), delivered divorce papers to her on Christmas Day.

In the past, Anita dismissed speculations about her coming back to Walford. She acknowledged that she felt she might be ‘too old’ for such a return as of 2022.

She expressed her surprise at the influence our actions had on the public, and even now, she continues to be overjoyed about it. She delightfully mentioned that the Watts were warmly embraced by everyone, as she shared this on Lorraine.

‘I don’t think I could [go back] at my old age, I’m too old now! Everybody nearly has gone!’

Contrary to her role as a popular character on the BBC soap EastEnders, Anita herself revealed that she rarely tunes in to watch it.

In December, the actress openly shared that it’s challenging for her to manage the high volume of weekly episodes, revealing she’s only caught snippets here and there.

She told The Mirror: ‘I tend to always miss it. But I do try to catch up with stuff now and again.

However, due to its fast pace, keeping up is quite challenging. You’d need to be always on the alert, not just watching here and there. No, I haven’t managed to watch it thoroughly.

I rarely watch TV, but I enjoy binge-watching shows because they offer a deeper experience, allowing me to watch them at my own pace instead of constantly playing catch-up.
