EastEnders Legend Derek Martin Turns 92: Discover His Life After the Soap!

Nine years back, Charlie Slater, the cherished taxi driver, was last spotted on EastEnders following his tragic demise due to a heart attack.

91-year-old actor Derek Martin debuted on screen in September 2000 and continued acting until he was let go in 2016.

From September 2000, at the age of 68, up until 2016, actor Derek Martin, who will be turning 92 in April this year, was part of various roles on screen.

Both versions convey the same information but use slightly different phrasing to make it more natural and easy to read.

Charlie came into Walford accompanied by his four daughters: Kat, Lynne, Little Mo, and Zoe, along with his mother-in-law, Big Mo Harris.

Over the course of fifteen years, I’ve had the privilege of embodying a cherished character in the soap opera, EastEnders. My journey has been marked by a series of heartwarming moments and, at times, entanglements in the Walford family’s most intricate scandals.

As a lifestyle advisor, I’ve been through some heart-wrenching twists in my own family saga. I discovered the harrowing truth that my beloved niece Kat was raped by my brother Harry Slater. This revelation led me to another shocking discovery – a baby swap scandal involving my granddaughter Little Mo, who had bravely escaped her abusive husband Trevor Morgan. These are experiences no one should ever have to face, but I’ve come to learn that strength and resilience can help us navigate even the toughest of storms.

This month, as the soap reaches its 40-year milestone by airing an engaging live segment, let’s explore what has become of the character Derek.

Upon stepping foot on that iconic soap after my beloved wife Viv’s passing, I found myself drawn to the enchanting Peggy Mitchell for a fleeting moment, but it wasn’t long until Brenda Boyle captured my heart.

In 2004, he spent three months behind bars for assaulting the man who had raped Little Mo, named Graham Foster (played by Alex McSweeney), at The Queen Victoria pub.

In the contentious 2011 plot, the cab driver played a crucial role as well, since it was revealed that the taxi driver had inadvertently switched Kat and Ronnie Branning’s newborn babies. This mix-up occurred after the barmaid’s baby passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

As I exited the square, I couldn’t help but feel the sting of Kat’s accusation about the recent event – she believed I had left Tommy unattended while I was out enjoying a night on the town.

After 2011, he occasionally appeared as a guest for short periods until 2013, then returned permanently to work full-time just before his passing in 2016.

In the year 2023, Derek marked his 90th birthday by celebrating it with his two sons, David and Jonathan.

Previously, the actor has been candid about his own son, David, fighting depression. Interestingly enough, his character also faced a similar struggle on screen.

In 2016, Stacey Branning, a relative of Walford’s (presumably a family member), struggled with postpartum psychosis and depression.

In the workplace, I handled a scenario involving Stacey. Upon returning home, I found my concerned son, who had been struggling with severe depression throughout the day. He shared this information with The Sun.

2022 saw Derek express concern that the soap should reinstate its comedic elements, as viewers are worried about its future following ITV’s announcement of significant changes in their broadcasting schedule.

The actor suggested that the show should shift its focus away from catering exclusively to a younger audience and instead rehire some of its original writers.

Fans of the long-running series EastEnders voiced worry that the show’s viewership might decrease significantly, given that competing soaps like Coronation Street and Emmerdale shifted their broadcast schedules.

In an open conversation with The Sun, I’ve confessed that our popular series seems to have veered off course from its original emphasis on iconic families like the Slaters, Mitchells, and Fowlers. As a lifestyle expert, it’s clear to me that refocusing on these vibrant family dynamics is essential for maintaining the show’s authenticity and appeal.

He shifted the focus of the show towards attracting a younger audience, eliminating lighter aspects and emphasizing more on drama and violence such as ‘conflicts and physical confrontations.’

Derek said: ‘You’ve got to have humour because there’s always something to laugh about in life.

Originally, characters like Charlie, Patrick Trueman played by Rudolph Walker, and Jim Branning portrayed by John Bardon were often found at the allotments, sharing a few drinks while chatting about trivial matters. This is authentic and should be included in ‘EastEnders’.

‘I have no issues with young individuals; they represent our future. However, it seems like the BBC is transforming EastEnders into a show similar to Hollyoaks, with an excessive focus on young characters involved in romantic entanglements and violence.’

Outside of EastEnders he starred on Celebrity Coach Trip in 2012 with his co-star John Altman.

Additionally, Derek assumed the position of the King Rat within the British entertainment industry group known as The Grand Order of Water Rats.
