EastEnders leaves its rivals in the dust as show takes home 8 gongs at the British Soap Awards (and another series only receives one)

The residents of Walford celebrated a successful evening, as EastEnders claimed victory at this year’s British Soap Awards, taking home eight awards.

Notable stars from the nation’s beloved soap operas gathered at Hackney Empire, London, last Saturday, gracing the venue for the annual event that was orchestrated by Jane McDonald.

However, BBC’s EastEnders dominated the evening with a total of eight awards, whereas Hollyoaks took home three, Emmerdayle earned two, and Coronation Street claimed just one award.

They kicked off their wins with Best Episode which went to Phil’s Psychosis: The Mitchells In 1985.

As a devoted viewer, I’m thrilled to share that EastEnders took home the accolade for Scene of the Year, recognizing Angie Watts’ dramatic comeback. Moreover, Navin Chowdhry was honored with Best Villain for his captivating portrayal of Nish Panesar.

Steve McFadden, known for his portrayal of beloved character Phil Mitchell, received the Best Dramatic Performance accolade, and Patsy Palmer was honored with the Best Comedic Performance award for her performance as Bianca Jackson.

Rudolph Walker and Angela Wynter, portraying Patrick and Yolande Trueman on EastEnders, secured another victory by taking home the award for Best On-screen Duo.

Lacey Turner, the actress portraying Stacey Slater, was honored with the prestigious Best Leading Performer Award, while EastEnders clinched the highly sought-after title of Best British Soap.

The soap opera “Hollyoaks” kicked off its collection of three accolades when Isabelle Smith was recognized with the ‘Best Newcomer’ award, owing to her captivating portrayal of the character Frankie Osborne.

In the end, the Osbornes bagged the Best Family award, while the Hollyoaks series earned recognition for its most outstanding Storyline about sibling sexual abuse.

In the Emmerdale awards, Amelia Flanagan was recognized as the Best Young Performer for her role as April Windsor on screen, and Mike Plant, our skilled camera operator, received the prestigious Tony Warren Award, honoring those who work diligently off-camera.

The only award given out on Coronation Street last night was the Outstanding Achievement Award, which was presented to David Neilson, who has portrayed the character Roy Cropper for thirty years.

Last year’s show was suddenly cancelled with no explanation after the nominees had been announced.

In the June 2023 release, a combined audience of 5.7 million tuned in, with approximately 900 thousand viewings on ITVX and a high of 3.2 million viewers during its initial linear broadcast at night.

61-year-old Jane, who openly confesses her love for soap operas and is also a singer, took over as a substitute at the last minute when Philip Schofield resigned from ITV two years ago following his confession of having an affair with a younger male coworker on This Morning.

As your go-to lifestyle guide, let me tell you, I can barely contain my enthusiasm for returning as host of The British Soap Awards! Last year’s event was nothing short of a blast, and I can’t wait to recreate that magic again this time around.

Everyone here knows I have a soft spot for soaps, so it brings me great pleasure to be in this room honoring such talented actors for their dedication and exceptional work. I am eagerly looking forward to dressing up in a sparkling gown and joining you all in the celebration.

In the meantime, Gemma John-Lewis, ITV’s Entertainment Commissioner, stated: ‘The British Soap Awards serve as a platform for us to honor and highlight the exceptional performers and dedicated production crews who create compelling narratives and dramatic content all year round.’

As a devoted admirer of soaps, I’m thrilled to share that Jane McDonald, who proudly dubs herself as the ultimate soap enthusiast, is making her comeback as the host for these prestigious awards.

The British Soap Awards airs this Thursday at 8pm on ITV1 & ITVX.
