EastEnders’ Emotional Funeral: Stacey’s Tears and Bex’s Return Shocks Albert Square
In fresh photos from set, Stacey Slater of EastEnders can be seen emotionally overwhelmed and shedding tears, as the community of Albert Square comes together for Martin Fowler’s funeral.
In the recent live episode of the BBC soap for its 40th anniversary, the cherished character portrayed by James Bye met a tragic end. He was caught in an accident where a steel beam fell on him after an explosion at the Queen Vic; this unfortunate incident took place earlier this month.
Following the unfortunate event, everyone involved – cast and crew – convened at the cemetery site for a heartfelt farewell by Walford to the deceased market vendor.
In this production, it was Lacey Turner, portraying Stacey, who delivered a heartfelt performance, visibly exhausted during takes, playing a character mourning the loss of Martin.
In a touching moment during the emotional graveyard scenes, the character received consolation from Jean Slater, played by Gillian Wright.
I couldn’t help but feel my heart race as I eagerly awaited the return of Bex Fowler, Martin’s cherished daughter, to the familiar streets of Walford. It was like a dream come true when I saw Jasmine Armfield gracefully stepping back into her role once more, bringing Bex back to life for her father’s poignant farewell.

After many years of wandering, Bex finally reconnected with her loved ones during the ceremony, among them her mother Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) and her aunt Bianca (Patsy Palmer).
At the funeral, Alice Haig, playing the role of Vicky Fowler, was seen appearing quite emotional. The character of Vicky Fowler, who has been absent for many years while residing in America, is set to return.
Additionally, present at the scene were Martin’s extended family members, Kathy Beale (played by Gillian Taylforth) and Ian Beale (portrayed by Adam Woodyatt), along with other friends and locals.
Under their black outfits and shielded by umbrellas, the actors endured the gloomy, rain-soaked conditions while filming emotionally intense sequences.
Following his birth as the very first baby on the show, unfortunately, Martin met a tragic end after an explosion occurred at the Queen Vic.
In a heart-rending twist of fate, I found myself shattered just as my idol did, mirroring his plight when a massive beam came crashing down upon him after valiantly trying to save the woman he adores, Stacey Slater.
Initially, it seemed like Martin was successfully freed from under the beam, but tragically, his heart failed just as firefighters were attempting to rescue him.
In a heartrending moment, Martin passed away right before Stacey’s eyes, mere minutes after expressing his love for her and popping the question. This unexpected turn of events left Stacey weeping profusely.

The tragic ending saw Stacey clinging to Martin, who was no longer alive, as her anguished cries echoed through the Queen Vic doors towards those anxiously awaiting updates.
People swiftly turned to X (previously recognized as Twitter) to express their sorrow and disbelief upon learning about Martin’s passing, acknowledging that they were grieving deeply.
The comments expressed that ‘EastEnders made me shed tears just like that’; ‘It was real-time. They had the opportunity to prevent it from occurring.’
This version maintains the meaning of the original sentence while using more natural and easy-to-read language. It also clarifies the meaning of “LIVE” by saying “real-time,” which is a common term used to describe live broadcasts or events.
1. It’s unbelievably tragic they took Martin away from us;
2. I can hardly bear it since they did that;
3. Watching EastEnders left me in tears;
4. I need to take some time off work because of my grief, and that sound will linger with me.
1. ‘It was excruciating to observe’;
2. “Please, bring Martin back on EastEnders immediately! I can’t forgive you if he doesn’t return.” (This one is a bit more informal and emphasizes the urgency of the request.)
Martin made his debut in Walford back on July 30, 1985. He was initially portrayed by Jon Peyton-Price, followed by James Alexandrou, and later, in 2014, the character was assumed by James Bye.
For a decade, James has been a key figure in EastEnders’ most significant plotlines, and he spoke movingly as he bid farewell to the show.
He expressed that parting ways isn’t simple, however, with ten years spent at EastEnders, particularly on the evening of its spectacular 40th anniversary special – it seemed like the perfect moment to move on.
I am grateful to depart from such a grand narrative. A heartfelt appreciation goes out to each fan of the series, as EastEnders wouldn’t hold its unique charm without your support – and to the BBC and EastEnders team for bestowing upon me this significant role over the years.
The produce vendor will forever be close to my heart. As we move on, I am filled with anticipation about the exciting prospects that lie ahead. Farewell, Martin Fowler.

Simultaneously, Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw commented: ‘It’s truly heartbreaking to bid farewell to James, a cherished and dedicated colleague who has served our company faithfully for a decade.’
In tonight’s live broadcast, James delivered an exceptional performance as Martin Fowler that is sure to resonate deeply with many of you at home, earning him widespread admiration from viewers.
In the conversation about James leaving, it was clear that Martin Fowler required a significant, dramatic plotline that fittingly matched his character.
‘Leaving the show with such a powerful plot twist, especially during a live broadcast, takes immense bravery from any actor. This decision is likely to become a memorable moment in the annals of EastEnders.’
I’d really like to express my gratitude to James for his contributions to EastEnders. We’ll surely miss him at Elstree, but he’s an integral part of our EastEnders family, forever. Wishing him all the very best in his future endeavors!
