Earl of Devon turns his Hogwarts-style castle into a classroom after dozens of pupils hit by floods
As I delve into these captivating tales, I find myself awestruck by the diverse lives that unfold before our eyes. Children attending a primary school that was devastated by floods are now learning in a castle reminiscent of Hogwarts, all due to the kindness and generous donation of a local noble.
60 students have been warmly greeted by the 19th Earl of Devon as they begin a new school term at the historic Powderham Castle, which is nestled close to Exeter.
Nevertheless, certain restrictions apply. Children from Kenton Primary School are forbidden from rolling down the hill and chasing any nearby animals.
He explains that it’s forbidden for them to pursue the deer, as we need to establish boundaries for their actions.
‘What’s rather exciting is that the rooms they’re occupying were the tearooms of the castle in the 1950s and 1960s, and the toilets they’re using are the original public toilets. So there’s a slot where you have to put in a penny to spend a penny.’
As a devoted follower, I gladly made available the historical space within my castle, dating back to the 14th century, upon Lorraine Curry, the esteemed headmistress, requesting its use for our cherished school.
Since the destructive floods in October, the students have been learning in temporary classrooms situated within a nearby church. However, they will temporarily move to Powderham from now until November, as construction on their new school is being completed.
As a lifestyle expert, I can wholeheartedly say that the young ones simply adore this place. The daily commute here, winding down the driveway, passing through the deer park, and eventually arriving at the castle, feels nothing short of dreamlike. Truly, this has been an extraordinary experience for all involved.
The individual, who shares two children with his ex-wife, the former Baywatch actress AJ Langer, and who were schooled at Kenton, remarks that it’s delightful to have the kids infusing the castle with lots of vibrant youthfulness. He further mentions that it’s a pleasant opportunity for the upcoming generation of children to get acquainted with Powderham. He concludes by saying that it will be an integral part of their childhood memories, which is wonderful.
