Eamonn Holmes opens up about his ‘terrible’ health battles and admits he doesn’t know if doctors will ever find a cure

Eamonn Holmes has shared details about his difficult health struggles, and confessed he’s unsure if doctors will ever be able to find a solution.

The 66-year-old TV presenter’s health took a turn for the worse in 2021 when he dislocated his pelvis and damaged three discs in his back.

This resulted in multiple spinal surgeries in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

It breaks my heart to say that Eamonn now has very limited movement. He needs a wheelchair to get around, and he depends on a wonderful team of carers to help him with everyday things like getting dressed. It’s tough, but he’s handling it with such strength.

The GB News presenter shared how losing his ability to move easily and struggling with severe back pain have significantly impacted his life.

He admitted he wasn’t feeling his best, explaining that he’s been dealing with back and paralysis issues for the past three years.

It’s really difficult to accept this situation. The frustrating part is that doctors haven’t figured out what’s causing it, so I’m just managing it as best I can and hoping they discover a treatment eventually.

When asked about daily pain, Eamonn explained that his paralysis and difficulty moving cause him the most trouble. He said simply getting around is a challenge.

‘This has affected me in so many ways.’

Even though he’s been dealing with several health issues, Eamonn appeared cheerful this week when he attended The Hippodrome Casino. He was there for a live interview with TV presenter Hayley Palmer, as part of a special ‘Audience With’ event.

You know, I was so touched to see a colleague recently roll onto the GB News stage – yes, with a stroller! – to take on a presenting role. It just goes to show that passion for what you do doesn’t fade, and he was thrilled to still be working in television, despite what some reports might have suggested. It was a really lovely moment, proving you can absolutely continue doing what you love, no matter what challenges come your way.

He highlighted that the best part of GB News is its ability to have open conversations and directly engage with viewers.

‘But I’ll not be running along to do the weather forecast or anything like that.

I enjoy being busy, but my work isn’t physically demanding like my father’s and brothers’. I’ve never had a job that required hard manual labor.

‘You notice the difference when you’re not doing it the way other people are doing it in real life.

It’s incredible, really. My advice is to pursue what you’re passionate about, and it won’t feel like work at all – it’s a wonderful way to live.

Before starting at GB News in 2022, the Irish presenter hosted a morning show on ITV alongside his former wife, Ruth Langsford, for fifteen years, from 2006 to 2021.

Following Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s departures from This Morning in 2023, Cat Deeley, 49, and Ben Shephard, 51, have become the show’s new main presenters.

Eamonn shared his honest opinion about the new presenters on This Morning, saying he thinks they’re doing well as hosts.

He defended their actions, stating he saw no issue with what they did. He mentioned he recently spent St. Patrick’s Day with Cat’s husband.

Eamonn shared entertaining stories from his four-decade-long TV career, including his take on who the biggest diva is – Mariah Carey. He confessed that interviewing her was his least enjoyable experience on television.

He explained: ‘She’s always is a complete pain in the a**.

‘I don’t understand why people give them this superiority and presence and whatever.

I’ve interviewed her several times, and she’s consistently challenging to work with. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind at all if our paths never crossed again.

During the question-and-answer session, he shared that he abruptly left a conversation with the famous singer after she arrived four hours late and then chose to nap instead of talking.

Eamonn was annoyed when Mariah’s team explained her lateness by saying she was tired, as she hadn’t woken up until 9am. He found this unconvincing, having already been awake for five hours.

The GB News personality unexpectedly decided to lie down on the sofa next to Mariah during the interview, much to the dismay of her team, creating a comical and awkward situation.

Mariah’s team was very upset by the decision, so Eamonn announced he was ending the interview and immediately left.

He explained that he’d been awake since four that morning, so he was surprised and frustrated by the situation. He decided that if she wasn’t there within ten minutes, he was leaving.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when she walked in and just flopped down on the chaise lounge, closing her eyes right away. I was completely shocked and blurted out, ‘What is happening?’ Apparently, everyone was trying to explain that Ms. Carey was just exhausted, having been up since nine that morning.

I remember saying, ‘She’s been awake since nine, and I’ve been up since four!’ Then, I went and lay down next to her. I wouldn’t do that now, though, because a lot has changed.
