Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s Disney sequel has been cancelled

Fans hoping for a sequel to the 2021 movie Jungle Cruise will be disappointed. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt have announced that a follow-up film is currently not in development. While the original movie did well when it came out as theaters reopened after COVID-19 lockdowns, plans for a second film have been put on hold.

Now, however, it seems those plans have sunk.

While promoting their new movie, The Smashing Machine, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt told Entertainment Weekly that a sequel to Jungle Cruise likely won’t happen. Both actors stated simply, “I don’t think so.”

Johnson stated that Disney’s approach changed when new leaders took over, especially following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID significantly impacted how their business operated.

They previously considered that property and, after revisiting the idea, weren’t sure if it was worth pursuing again, regardless of how well we worked together.

Blunt quipped that bosses “did not want to set sail again, and that’s fine.”

Johnson had previously shared their enthusiasm about returning to these characters, even tweeting in 2021, “ALL ABOARD… This is going to be FUN!”

The movie featured Édgar Ramírez, Jesse Plemons, Paul Giamatti, and Jack Whitehall, who received a lot of attention, and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

In contrast, The Smashing Machine tells a different story, featuring Johnson as Mark Kerr, a former wrestler and MMA fighter, and Blunt as his partner, Dawn Staples.

Critics generally like the film, giving it a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They praise Dwayne Johnson’s performance as Mark Kerr, calling it a standout role. While the movie doesn’t follow a typical story structure, it’s a realistic and impactful biopic that delivers emotionally.

The film premiered to great success at the Venice International Film Festival in September. During the event, actor Johnson was visibly moved to tears, and writer-director Benny Safdie received the Silver Lion award.

Emily Blunt is returning to her comedic roots in the highly anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, set to release in May 2026. A teaser trailer offering a first look at Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway was released earlier this month.
