The following article contains spoilers for Dutton Ranch season 1, episode 3, “Act of God Business”.
The phrase “Don’t make me go Beth Dutton on you” has become incredibly popular with fans of the show Yellowstone. Paramount has capitalized on this, selling merchandise like T-shirts and mugs featuring the line. It references the character Beth Dutton, who is known for her quick wit and willingness to verbally—or even physically—confront anyone who challenges her.
That’s not quite what happens in the new series, though. Dutton Ranch, a spinoff of Yellowstone focusing on Beth and Rip Wheeler, follows the Dutton Ranch family after a massive Montana fire forces them to relocate to Rio Paloma, Texas. There, they invest everything they have in starting a small ranch.
It’s funny watching Beth and Rip now. Things are definitely different for them. They’re starting over in a place where the Dutton name doesn’t carry as much power, which is a challenge. But honestly, it’s kind of amazing to see them finally able to just live. For so long, their whole lives revolved around John Dutton, and now they’re free to build something peaceful for themselves, which they’ve never really had before. It’s a really nice change of pace.
The early episodes of Dutton Ranch show a gentler side of Beth Dutton. While she remains strong and doesn’t tolerate disrespect – as Beulah Jackson quickly learns – this version of Beth prioritizes compassion, like saving a horse, over fighting. However, things take a turn in episode 3, “Act of God Business,” as the Beth fans of Yellowstone know and love makes a comeback.
The Business-Savvy Beth Of Yellowstone Is Back (With A Twist)
Beth has changed a lot since the beginning of Yellowstone. She famously declared she avoided horses, but she’s always been more comfortable in a business setting than on a ranch. In episode 3 of Dutton Ranch, she trades her ranch wear for Louboutin heels and heads to the city to focus on the financial side of the ranch.
Beth sets her sights on Stillwell’s, Dallas’s most exclusive steakhouse, and quickly charms restaurant manager Giles into a deal. Previously, Beth would have focused on finding someone’s weakness and wouldn’t hesitate to hurt people to get what she wanted. But in Dutton Ranch, she tries a softer tactic: she offers the head chef double the amount of a missing tip if they’ll make sure Giles tries one of Beth’s steaks during the family meal.
It’s enjoyable to watch Beth use her sharp business skills to help others – almost as satisfying as seeing her deliver a classic, fiery confrontation at the Dutton Ranch. Although her conversation with Joaquin Reyes seems surprisingly polite for Yellowstone, Beth comparing him to Jamie is likely her most cutting insult yet. As the pragmatic “problem solver” for the 10 Petal Ranch, Joaquin will probably face Beth’s wrath before the current season ends.
She May Need To “Go Beth Dutton” After Episode 3’s Devastating Ending
Okay, I was so glad to see Beth still has that fire in episode 3! But honestly, she hasn’t really unleashed her full, intimidating self yet in this new show. Still, getting that awful news after her successful trip to Dallas? That definitely feels like a warning – she’s about to have to get back to being the Beth Dutton we all know and maybe even turn things up a notch.
Beth returns home to find Rip with a cow showing alarming symptoms – foaming at the mouth and with blisters on its hooves. This isn’t the first cow on the Dutton Ranch to show signs of foot-and-mouth disease. They suspect the new bull Beth and Rip recently purchased at auction, winning the bid over Beulah Jackson, is the source of the outbreak.
While it hasn’t been definitively proven, Beulah is very likely responsible for the infected bull, solidifying her position as the most cunning villain in the Yellowstone world. Because Beth and Rip’s cattle are now exposed to foot-and-mouth disease, the deal she made with the Stillwells is worthless, as they’ll be forced to destroy their entire herd – a loss they can’t recover from. It seems the only solution will be for the main character of the Dutton Ranch to take extremely aggressive action against Beulah Jackson, mirroring Beth Dutton’s signature style.
