At San Diego Comic-Con, author Matt Dinnaman discussed the possibility of multiple seasons for the upcoming TV show based on the Dungeon Crawler Carl books. Peacock officially confirmed the adaptation earlier this year, giving the green light for a full first season in June. The series follows Carl, a former US Coast Guard member, as he navigates a dangerous dungeon with his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, all while trying to save Earth from a powerful galactic organization called the Syndicate.
I was really interested to hear what Matt Dinnaman had to say at San Diego Comic-Con when ScreenRant‘s Joe Deckelmeier asked about the future of Dungeon Crawler Carl. He explained that they’re currently focused on making Season 1 the best it can be. While he confirmed there have been talks about potentially continuing the show for multiple seasons, he compared it to painting a room – you need to finish the first coat before planning what color to paint next! So, right now, all his energy is going into completing Season 1.

We’re still in the very early stages and haven’t started discussing those details yet. It feels like we’re preparing the space before we can even begin thinking about what comes next – we haven’t reached that point.
Deckelmeier chatted with Jeff Hays, the voice of Princess Donut in both the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobook and the TV show. Hays shared that his popular portrayal of the character was a key reason he was chosen for the TV adaptation. Dinniman confirmed Hays was always his top pick for the role, making it a natural fit for the series.

Jeff Hays says he didn’t really need to campaign for his role in the TV series. From the moment discussions about the show began, fans strongly pressured the production team – even making threats – if he wasn’t cast. He feels the producers made the right decision, and it seems like fans are now happy with the outcome, as evidenced by positive reactions on social media.
I certainly don’t want to create any conflict, and honestly, Jeff was always the person I preferred.
The new fantasy TV show is currently planned as one season, but could continue if it’s popular with viewers. There’s a lot of source material to work with – the Dungeon Crawler Carl book series has eight books, with the last one still being written and planned for release in two parts. If the show does well on Peacock, this first season could be the beginning of a much larger franchise for the novels. Ultimately, the show’s success will determine if it continues beyond the initial season.
The TV show Dungeon Crawler Carl is a collaboration between Universal International Studios and Fuzzy Door Productions, Seth MacFarlane’s production company.
