‘Dune’ studio set to produce Mobile Suit Gundam live-action
The long-awaited live-action adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam is upon us, a dream come true for enthusiasts of mecha and science fiction!
1979’s groundbreaking mecha and sci-fi anime, Mobile Suit Gundam, is set to make its live-action debut under the production of Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Entertainment. Notably, Legendary Entertainment has been behind the latest Dune films as well as other blockbusters such as Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Interstellar, and more.
A blockbuster in the anime industry
If you were born in or after the 1990s, it’s likely that you haven’t watched Mobile Suit Gundam, as this anime was popular among adolescents during its original run. This series played a significant role in shaping the “real robot” anime genre and was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, who is well-respected within the mecha anime community.
The anime gained massive popularity because it innovatively portrayed robots not as indestructible superweapons, but rather as conventional military equipment. This groundbreaking series is renowned for its intricate exploration of politics and warfare, delving into the realms of science, technology, and conflict – areas that only a select few studios dared to tackle at that time.
Over the years, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has produced a vast array of content including 25 anime series, 34 films, 27 Original Video Animations (OVAs), online content, exclusive footage from events, TV specials, and numerous other elements. This multimedia juggernaut brings in an impressive annual revenue of over $900 million.
What do we know about Mobile Suit Gundam live-action?
To date, information about the production process remains scant. However, it’s been confirmed that the live-action film, currently known as GUNDAM, is set for a global cinema release. Furthermore, Legendary Entertainment will establish a new subsidiary on April 1 specifically to oversee the production of GUNDAM.
Based on production timelines, it’s likely the live-action release could occur towards the end of 2026 or even early 2027. Further information about this project will be shared with the public in the coming months.
