Dune: Prophecy star Jade Anouka tells us all about Sister Theodosia’s unique “talent”

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for intricate narratives and a soft spot for the Dune series, I must say that “Twice Born” episode of Dune: Prophecy left me spellbound! The plot twists were as unexpected as a sandworm ambush in the desert of Arrakis. Lila’s survival, Desmond Hart’s thwarted assassination attempt, and Sister Theodosia’s shape-shifting abilities have certainly shaken the foundations of this already complex narrative.

In the latest episode number four of Dune: Prophecy, titled “Twice Born”, some unexpected turns were unveiled. It appears that Lila has survived, contrary to earlier assumptions. Moreover, Desmond Hart managed to thwart an attempt on the emperor’s life before the Bene Gesserit could intervene. Additionally, Sister Theodosia, who seems so demure and devoted as a religious acolyte, accompanied Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen to Salusa Secundus, and she has a shocking secret – she can change her form!

Towards the close of the episode, Theodosia exits a room bearing an uncanny resemblance to Valya’s deceased brother Griffin, who had passed away decades earlier. This striking similarity seems to be the reason behind Valya initially bringing Theodosia to Salusa Secundus, and now, with this likeness manifested, they are prepared to utilize this peculiar ability.

Here, we had the opportunity to interview actor Jade Anouka, who portrays Theodosia, and discuss various aspects of the topic with her. You can read our fascinating chat in the section that follows!

A: It seems like Theodosia’s unique ability was what we witnessed towards the end of the initial four episodes, correct?

Jade Anouka: “It’s not a talent!”

Q: How does Theodosia think of it?

Jade Anouka implies that the individual in question strongly believes her talent isn’t solely due to innate abilities; rather, it’s an integral part of her identity. She seems determined to break free from this label and demonstrate she possesses other skills and qualities. Joining the Sisterhood, according to Anouka, serves as a means for her to prove herself and escape the constant expectation to showcase her talent at parties. The Sisterhood, in essence, provides a safe haven where she can distance herself from having to perform, which evidently makes her uneasy.

Could you share which intriguing or peculiar scene from this season left you thinking, “Wow, this is extraordinary! This is bizarre! I can’t wait to discuss it!”?

Jade Anouka mentions that she can’t discuss what happens from Episode 4 onward, but it’s the part she’s most eager to share insights about. Discovering Theo’s abilities and powers was a fresh experience for her as an actor, and it was exciting to collaborate with various crew members on portraying those scenes effectively. In essence, she feels like she’s speaking in secret language.

How is Sister Theodosia able to shape-shift on Dune: Prophecy?

Incidentally, when Anouka replied “It’s not a talent,” to your initial query, she was actually repeating a line from Theodosia, a fact I only realized upon rewatching the show. Her observational skills are impressive indeed!

Another possibility is that we didn’t specifically ask Anouka about the method behind her shape-shifting, but if you’re versed in the world of Dune, you’d recognize that there’s a secretive group with such abilities: the Bene Tleilax, a lineage of genetically engineered humans who debut in Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ and maintain a recurring presence. It could be that Theodosia’s talent has some connection to them.

Here’s the best way to confirm it: Keep tuning in. Fresh episodes premiere every Sunday evening on both HBO and Max.
