As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen many ups and downs in the world of entertainment. Dave Hughes, a name synonymous with Australian radio, has had his fair share of both. His recent tennis outing might have shown a man down in the dumps, but let’s not forget that this is a man who has weathered stormy ratings and career changes with grace and humor.

Dave Hughes appeared rather down in the dumps as he took to the tennis court for a hit on Tuesday.

As a lifestyle expert, I might rephrase that like this: On a sunny day in Melbourne, I found myself, who recently experienced a setback with my radio show being canceled, walking alongside a friend, both of us keeping our spirits up and finding comfort in each other’s company.

Hughesy, 54, showed off his athletic prowess in a red T-shirt and black Nike gym shorts.

Keeping safety in mind for the sun, the jovial fellow donned a black hat over his face and moved swiftly wearing black athletic sneakers.

He also appeared to be tracking his outdoor workout with a smart watch.

For Dave, the past year has been a rollercoaster, marked by both triumphs and setbacks. His popular Hughesy, Ed & Erin 2DayFM breakfast show unexpectedly concluded in August due to plummeting ratings and certain commitments that needed his attention.

On the 8th of August, I received news from 2Day FM about their decision to discontinue the popular morning trio’s show and introduce a new duo, Jimmy Smith and Nath Roye, as hosts for the night shift, taking over The Jimmy and Nath Show.

That same evening, it was announced that the beleaguered hosts had been granted another chance to wrap things up the next morning on-air. However, they chose not to return for the broadcast.

Hughsey, Ed, and Erin shared that they have cherished their time on the 2DayFM Breakfast show, but because some of their family members reside in various cities, they find it challenging to dedicate themselves to the program for the year 2025.

With regret, we’re stepping back to give 2DayFM space to locate their new team for the Breakfast slot.

In the most recent viewership survey, the show, which is co-hosted by Dave, Ed Kavalee, and Erin Molan, only garnered a modest 3.6 percentage of the market audience.

It’s said that millions of dollars were spent trying to save the popular radio show, yet no effort proved successful in keeping it broadcasting.

Based on what industry sources are saying, the separation was something that had been anticipated for some time by the group, and their declining audience numbers seemingly served as the decisive factor.

According to a source, Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) has put in substantial funds and even had Hughesy move from Melbourne to Sydney, with the aim of establishing a stronger bond with local listeners by residing there. However, despite these efforts, the show continues to face difficulty in attracting an audience.

At the beginning of the year, a new executive producer was hired away from KIIS. However, this change didn’t seem to be sufficient, and now, unsurprisingly, the decision has been made to abandon that arrangement.

After the declaration, Southern Cross Austereo expressed gratitude towards their radio hosts for their heartfelt dedication and devotion.

Dave Cameron expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards Hughesy, Ed, and Erin for consistently providing an enjoyable start to Sydney’s day through the 2DayFM Breakfast show since 2020. He wishes them nothing but success as they carry on their impressive careers,” said SCA Chief Content Officer.

Looking ahead to 2025, we’re getting ready to bring about some changes for the 2DayFM Sydney Breakfast show. We’ll share more details when the time is right.

The Jimmy & Nath Show has temporarily moved into the Breakfast timeslot.

The statement was made after whispers circulated that Hughes might be teaming up again with Kate Langbroek, aged 58, for a revival of their well-known Hughesy and Kate program.

In 2019, I had the privilege of co-hosting a highly-rated radio show on Hit FM alongside a fantastic partner. However, afterwards, I made a life-changing decision to relocate to Italy and temporarily step away from the program.

In July, news outlets like the Herald Sun mentioned that there’s a buzz in Melbourne suggesting that Langbroek and Hughes might be preparing to revive their popular show.

Meanwhile, Hughes recently did a guest spot on Triple M’s The Rush Hour in Melbourne which was a big hit with listeners.

Hughes and Langbroek first teamed together in 2001 for Nova 100’s Melbourne breakfast show.

At present, Langbrook is jointly hosting the well-liked podcast “The Buck Up” alongside Nath Valvo, having departed from her previous radio job at KIIS FM’s “The Pick Up” program about two years back.

She teased a potential radio reunion with Hughes last year.

She shared with the Herald Sun last August that there’s a deep well of affection between us, and we’re open to anything in our relationship.

“I have a soft spot for Hughesy, and though I’m currently not involved in radio broadcasting, my affection for radio remains constant. It’s just such a comfortable fit for me as a medium.

Elsewhere, Hughesy is currently gearing up for his stand up tour next year.

From February through June next year, the comedian will perform at multiple events in Australia’s main cities, and from May to November 2025, they will also visit various regional areas.
