Duchess Sophie makes glasses cool on CBeebie's Bedtime Stories with "Specs for Rex"

As a glasses-wearing gamer from the 80s, I can wholeheartedly say that the Duchess of Edinburgh has never been more relatable than when she read “Specs for Rex” on CBeebies Bedtime Stories. Growing up with a pair of red specs myself, I remember the struggle of trying to hide them, only to realize that they were my superpower all along!

Her Royal Highness Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is renowned for her stylish fashion choices. She exudes elegance whether she’s wearing classic pieces at the Edinburgh International Festival or mixing trends like the Beulah London Yahvi Midi Dress and “Persephone in Crepe” hat for the 2024 Trooping the Colour. However, I personally believe she looks most radiant when dressing casually for CBeebies Bedtime Stories.

Glasses and superpowers

Sophie, donning spectacles that any fan of David Tennant would recognize as “intellectual glasses,” introduced a miniature lion adorned with oversized red eyeglasses. “Meet Rex,” the Duchess explained. “He’s quite stylish in his specs. Do you or someone in your family wear glasses?” As a 43-year-old who once wore red glasses as a child and didn’t find myself feeling fashionable, I was intrigued by her introduction to Rex’s story, where he struggled with self-consciousness due to his new eyewear.

The children’s book titled “Specs for Rex” by Yasmeen Ismail narrates the story of a young lion who has an undisclosed vision issue. At the beginning, we learn only that he sports new spectacles and is eager to conceal them. He finds it challenging due to their oversized, round, and red appearance. Ismail’s captivating illustrations portray this character in a manner that seems almost too grand for reality.

Rex’s mom wishes him a great day at school, yet she might not realize the challenges that come with wearing large, round, red glasses which can’t be hidden by his hair or kept in his snack until needed, nor painted over during art class. However, things look up when he is able to assist his teacher, receiving both praise for his keen observation and a gold star as recognition.

Sophie affectionately appraises his distinctive, large, circular spectacles as both stylish and useful, remarking that they’re an integral part of him. In essence, she’s suggesting to compliment someone on how well their glasses suit them and to imagine the fascinating sights we’ll discover tomorrow.

Just as YouTube Channel suggests, there are numerous additional tales available on BBC iPlayer, so go ahead and explore further. Oh, and remember to grab your glasses!
