Ducati Honors the Italian Grand Prix with “Genius of the Renaissance”

Earlier this month, a multitude of motorbike enthusiasts gathered worldwide for the Italian Grand Prix. At the esteemed Mugello racetrack, Ducati presented their newest venture, a tribute to Italy’s illustrious cultural legacy and its influential role during the Renaissance period.

This project delves into the enchanting aspects of art, technology, and superior craftsmanship. It blends the shared spirit of the Italian Renaissance during the 14th and 16th centuries with Ducati’s essence to design a unique paint job for Desmosedici GP motorcycles and racing suits.

The ideas draw inspiration from two distinct aspects of the same period: the harmonious blend of art and science embodied by Leonardo da Vinci; and Niccolò Machiavelli, symbolizing the more complex, controversial side of the Renaissance. While Leonardo’s renowned “Ancient Captain” sketch takes center stage, historian Marcello Simonetta utilizes a quote from Machiavelli’s “The Prince”: “A ruler must know how to handle both cunning and power, for the lion cannot escape traps, and the fox cannot repel wolves. Therefore, one must be as cunning as a fox to detect traps, and as bold as a lion to intimidate wolves. Those who rely solely on force fail to grasp this.

Ducati delves into the image of the contemporary knight and their mechanical steeds by featuring riders Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Márquez as the protagonists of this tale. Designer Drudi reimagines two historical symbols, the lion and the fox, in a modern context, incorporating them into the bike’s unique design. The racing numbers 63 and 93 are also prominently displayed on their bikes, mirroring the armor-like suits worn by the riders, furthering the theme of this reimagined story.

The campaign’s visuals transport the riders to the art-rich city of Florence, famously called “the birthplace of the Renaissance.” They celebrate the ideals of chivalry and the city’s deep appreciation for them. From the grand Stibbert Museum to iconic spots like Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio — it embodies the essence of design mastery and aesthetic charm.
