DrLupo kicked out of Pogchamps chess tourney for cheating, then lied about it
In simpler terms, DrLupo was eliminated from the PogChamps 6 streamer chess competition but repeatedly fabricated stories about the incident.
In my own words as a dedicated fan: I, being a devoted follower, found myself in a disappointing situation when Benjamin “DrLupo” Lupo was disqualified from Pogchamps 6 due to a breach of fair play rules, as announced by Chess.com. Later on, the streamer confessed to cheating during his matches, which was followed by accusations that he had also been dishonest about his methods. However, DrLupo eventually owned up to his mistakes and came clean about the whole incident. Here’s the complete account of what happened.
DrLupo cheats in Pogchamps 6
This year’s sixth installation of PogChamps is an online chess competition organized by Chess.com. It attracted numerous well-known figures in the digital realm, such as gymnast Steven Nedoroscik and professional Fortnite gamer Mongraal.
In our recent showdown, I found myself squaring off against the skilled Pokémon content creator, WolfeyVGC. However, when rumors of cheating surfaced, it put a bit of a damper on things. In that critical moment, I made a move that cost me my queen, but then took a brief pause to strategize. From there, I systematically dismantled Wolfey in the remainder of the match. It’s important to mention that while neither of us are seasoned chess players, Wolfey has a rating of 1340 on Chess.com, and mine is 612. In the end, I managed to sweep the series against him, 2-0.
Following the conclusion of the series, DrLupo’s chat accused him of cheating. He countered these allegations by explaining that his frequent glances to the left were merely a habit, as he was accustomed to his chat being there. However, he admitted that during the game, he had closed the chat window. Regarding his victories against Wolfey, DrLupo attributed them to having a few fortunate games.
After the match, he also spoke to Wolfey over a call. In his conversation with him, DrLupo expressed his concerns about rumors spreading on social media and chat platforms that he had cheated during their encounter. “I strongly doubt you started this, but it seems like many people are claiming I did,” DrLupo told Wolfey. However, Wolfey accepted the defeats and accusations with dignity, stating that he chose not to engage in such discussions. “I trust your innocence, I’m certain you didn’t cheat,” said Wolfey.
Shortly thereafter, he posted on X platform expressing his intention to step down from the contest, citing a desire to uphold fair competition and acknowledging that he had obtained additional information from the mainstream’s chat.
Yet, the official Chess.com X account promptly responded, stating that he was removed from the tournament because of a breach of fair play rules. “Getting any assistance during a game is against our fair play regulations and leads to [disqualification] and account termination.
In my own words, I acknowledge that I breached the trust of the chess community and I understand why they would feel this way, as I made a terrible mistake. To put it mildly, I messed up. Following this incident, I expressed my sincere apologies to Wolfey. Interestingly enough, given my vocal stance against Escape from Tarkov cheaters, it’s ironic that I am the one who was caught cheating. It’s quite humorous, actually, as I am known for being a strong opponent of cheaters in the Tarkov community.
He confessed that not only did he deceive about how he cheated, but also that he used a chess engine in another broadcast, implying he was getting the optimal moves from a computer to play.
Macaiyla has taken DrLupo’s spot in the tournament.
Community reacts to DrLupo’s chess cheating incident
Well, I wasn’t too surprised by the harsh reactions from the community towards DrLupo following the recent event. It seems like a hot topic, judging by the numerous Reddit discussions popping up about it, and each one is attracting hundreds, if not thousands, of passionate comments.
The first post that pointed out his ability and results labeled it as “obvious dishonesty.” This post sparked many conversations, with some educating those unaware of chess about the difference. Reddit user Awesome_Days compared it to bringing a calculator into a mental math competition, using the calculator for 20 problems consecutively when he couldn’t even perform multiplication before having the calculator in hand.
The confession of his wrongdoings and shortcomings within the streaming community significantly damaged his reputation and trustworthiness in the gaming space. A Reddit user named leaf_blowr commented, “He admitted to cheating by peeking at chat/broadcast moves/etc., not that he used an engine. It raises questions about whether he’s cheated in other games he has played.
After getting caught, he showed no eagerness to be completely honest and straightforward, instead always considering ways to avoid admitting wrongdoings and minimize their impact as much as possible, according to a comment. This behavior makes one wonder what other things he might be deceitfully concealing.
