Drake Bell teases potential Drake & Josh reunion with Josh Peck 20 years after the original – but he doesn’t want it to be just ‘another reboot’
As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the potential reboot of Drake & Josh is an exciting prospect for both fans and the actors involved. However, as someone who has seen the ups and downs of Hollywood and the entertainment industry, I believe that a successful reboot requires more than just cashing in on nostalgia.
Despite sharing disturbing allegations about suffering abuse at the hands of a dialogue coach as a teenager on Nickelodeon, as seen in the docuseries Quiet On Set, Drake Bell said he’s open to take part in a reboot of Drake & Josh.
38-year-old actor shared that he and his ex-onscreen sibling have discussed the possibility of reprising their old popular teen sitcom, but with a twist. Instead, it might be structured as a buddy comedy, set two decades later from the original series.
Bell shared with The Patriot-News that he was eager, but also had reservations. They had previously discussed the idea, yet he didn’t feel it was the right time when everyone was working on reboots. It seemed like an unnecessary trend: “Well, of course, let’s do a reboot because everyone is doing reboots.”
He suggested, “If we’re planning to take action, let’s make it extraordinary. Instead, let’s create a memorable impact rather than just another repetition.”
In a subsequent conversation, Bell proposed an idea that he had previously discussed with Peck – namely, acting out alternate renditions of their classic characters, Jake and Josh.
He expressed his doubt about the idea of us portraying characters from the show or having our sister Meg (Miranda Cosgrove). Instead, he suggested that it might be more entertaining for us to pursue other buddy comedies in the future. These could be unexpected and different, offering more interest.
In the original series produced by Dan Schneider for Nickelodeon, Drake Parker, portrayed by Drake Bell, and Josh Nichols, played by Josh Peck, acted as unconventional stepbrothers with an odd-couple dynamic throughout the show’s four seasons that aired from 2004 to 2007 on the network.
The debut episode of Drake & Josh attracted an impressive audience of 3.2 million viewers, establishing it as a series frequently appearing in the top-rated shows within its target age group.
In the show, Nancy Sullivan played Drake’s mom, while Jonathan Goldstein took on the role of Josh’s dad. Miranda Cosgrove, meanwhile, brought to life Drake’s cunning younger sibling.
In September 2007, a TV special titled “Really Big Shrimp” concluded the series, having broadcast a total of 56 episodes spanning over four seasons.
In 2008, following the final episode, the network broadcasted a one-off holiday special titled “Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh.”
Besides Bell, Peck, and the principal actors, there were also several recurring characters including Yvette Nicole Brown, Jerry Trainor, Allison Scagliotti, Alec Medlock, Scott Halberstadt, Jake Farrow, Julia Duffy, Roark Critchlow, Cathy Shim, and Johnny Lewis.
In an extensive account, Bell shared his experiences of mistreatment as depicted in Quiet On Set, a five-part documentary that unveiled some aspects of the harmful environment behind the scenes of children’s TV shows between the 1990s and 2000s.
In the third installment, it’s disclosed that Bell suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a past Nickelodeon dialogue coach named Brian Peck.
The actor and musician maintains he got loads of support in the wake of the revelations he made in the Quiet On Set documentary
In my personal account, I found myself standing before the court, admitting to charges of misconduct, which unfortunately landed me a 16-month sentence in prison. Additionally, I was compelled by law to register myself as a sex offender. This is a humbling experience that I must face and learn from.
At present, Bell’s main focus lies with his music, specifically his current tour that accompanies the release of his fifth album titled “Non-Stop Flight”.
Following his performance in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the artist graciously expressed his appreciation on Instagram with the words, ‘I am incredibly grateful.’
His next show is scheduled for The Token Lounge in Westland, Michigan on Sunday, August 18.
In 2003, Peck was apprehended and indicted for allegations of child sexual abuse; however, the identity of the victim remained confidential.
In the end, the TV station worker received a sentence of 16 months in prison and was mandated to register as a registered sex offender.
Upon the unveiling of the premiere, I found myself overwhelmed by the extraordinary outpouring of support from fans. It truly has been astounding.
The person from Newport Beach, California expressed that there has been an overwhelming amount of backing. Diving headfirst into such a situation can make one feel anxious. It’s like riding an emotional roller coaster, filled with uncertainty about how others will respond, what might transpire, or the consequences to follow. However, it has been heartwarming to see people opening up and sharing their personal tales. They have found it particularly pleasant.
