Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams Development Restarts

Summary

  • Square Enix restarted development on the next mainline entry in its iconic RPG series, renaming the project Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams
  • The game was originally announced in 2021 as The Flames of Fate before a team reshuffle forced a complete reset to better align with the core identity of the franchise
  • The May 27 broadcast also featured spin-off announcements and upcoming port reveals for Nintendo’s next-generation console

As a huge Dragon Quest fan, I was pretty surprised during the 40th anniversary livestream! Square Enix announced they’re basically starting over with Dragon Quest XII. Apparently, the original development had a lot of problems, so they’ve completely rebuilt it with a new team. They’ve even changed the subtitle from ‘The Flames of Fate’ to ‘Beyond Dreams’ and showed off a new logo and a little bit of gameplay. They said they want to make sure the game lives up to what fans like us are hoping for, and honestly, I appreciate them taking the time to get it right!

Beyond Dreams tells the story of a young protagonist haunted by strange dreams. While the game represents a significant leap forward in development, the creators assure fans it will still feel like a true Dragon Quest title. It will continue to feature character designs by the late Akira Toriyama and music by the late Koichi Sugiyama, honoring their incredible legacy. Unfortunately, a release date or the platforms it will be available on weren’t revealed. Because the game is being completely rebuilt, fans should expect a wait before it’s released.

During a presentation on May 27th, Square Enix announced some exciting news to ease fan disappointment about a previous delay. They revealed a new Dragon Quest game, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, which will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo’s next console. They also confirmed that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition will launch on the new Switch 2 console on September 24th. This gives fans new content to enjoy while the developers continue working on the next main Dragon Quest game.
