Dragon Ball Super’s Toyotarou Updates Fans With New Artwork of Goku’s First Teacher

Artist Toyotarou, who is believed to be the new author of Super , carries on Akira Toriyama’s tradition by creating fresh artwork featuring his iconic characters. In this instance, Toyotarou sketched Goku’s initial yet never-forgotten martial arts mentor.

On their official site, it was revealed that Toyotarou’s newest artwork for the April 2025 issue of the monthly series showcases a character from Dragon Ball, drawn in Toyotarou’s signature style created by Toriyama. Earlier installments have spotlighted well-known characters hailing from the Dragon Ball universe, along with some less prominent figures from other Shonen Jump tales. Specifically for April, Toyotarou chose to depict Master Roshi engaged in action.

Dragon Ball’s Master Roshi Fights Za Priccio in New Toyotarou Illustration

For quite some time now, devoted fans of “Dragon Ball” have been familiar with the fact that Master Roshi served as Goku’s initial martial arts instructor within the original 1986 anime series. Despite his advanced age and somewhat lewd tendencies, Roshi is widely respected for his remarkable fighting abilities. He even developed a technique known as the “Kamehameha” Wave, which he employed to extinguish the flames that ravaged the Lookout, though it took him 50 years to master this move. In stark contrast, young Goku managed to perform the Kamehameha himself in just a few minutes after witnessing it firsthand.

In the anime, Toyotaro’s portrayal of Master Roshi depicts a fight against Za Priccio. Previously in the original Dragon Ball series, Roshi used the Thunder Shock Surprise (or Lightning Flash Surprise attack) to incapacitate Za Priccio, with Tien Shinhan finishing him off by knocking him out of the ring using his Tri-Beam technique. In the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, this move was also used by Roshi to freeze a young student, and it almost cost Goku the match (and possibly his life). However, Goku managed to escape by inadvertently transforming into his Giant Ape form due to the influence of the full moon.
