Dragon Ball Super Creator Confirms Everything Is Canon to Him
At a recent news briefing, popular manga artist Toyotarou shared his viewpoint that, from his perspective, nothing in the Dragon Ball universe can be considered as non-official or non-standard content anymore.
The debate over which parts of the Dragon Ball story are essential has been a hot topic among fans since the airing of Dragon Ball Super in 2015, as it contradicted the narrative presented in Dragon Ball GT from 1996. However, for future developments within the Dragon Ball universe, determining what is considered canon versus non-canon might no longer be an issue. This is because the new sole writer of the Dragon Ball Super manga has declared that everything is now considered part of the official storyline.
Dragon Ball Super’s Toyotarou Considers Everything Canon, From GT to DAIMA
A recent press conference at Japan Expo Paris featured a discussion among Dragon Ball Super’s Toyotarou, longtime Dragon Ball editor Kazuhiko Torishima, and character designer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. During this gathering, they addressed several topics, such as their thoughts on AI’s potential impact on the manga industry, Toyotarou’s dissatisfaction with certain aspects, including something that even displeased Torishima, and an intriguing point Toyotarou made regarding the Dragon Ball series’ official storyline.
Based on reports from the conference, it was revealed that Toyotarou considers every aspect of Dragon Ball (DB) to be canonical for him personally. This statement might seem intriguing, but it shouldn’t come as a shock to fans who have been closely following Dragon Ball Super. Given that Toyotarou worked on the manga for Dragon Ball Heroes prior to creating Dragon Ball Super, it’s understandable why some may question its canonicity within the Dragon Ball universe. Although there is ongoing debate about the canonical status of Dragon Ball GT, few have previously made a convincing case for Dragon Ball Heroes being considered canon. However, Toyotarou’s statement now provides an argument that could potentially change perceptions.
In Chapter 104 of Dragon Ball Super, Toyotarou, who took over after Toriyama’s passing, introduced elements suggesting his unique take on the series’ canon or absence thereof. For instance, a statue in a museum visited during a field trip depicted Olibu, a character exclusive to the anime-only “filler” of Dragon Ball Z and never featured in Toriyama’s original manga. At the Japan Expo press conference, Toyotarou openly shared his perspective on canon and mentioned Dragon Ball Online as an alternate Dragon Ball media that he admired personally.
In simple terms, stories outside of the main series such as “Dragon Ball Heroes”, “Dragon Ball GT”, and video games like “Dragon Ball Online” or “Xenoverse” are now considered part of the Dragon Ball universe by the creators. This means that future developments in Dragon Ball Super could be influenced by these side stories. Toyotarou, the current manga artist for Dragon Ball Super, has recently expressed this view. The manga is currently on hiatus since Chapter 104 released in February. However, with this new perspective on the series’ canon, upcoming anime like “Dragon Ball DAIMA” and games like “Dragon Ball Sparking Zero” may contain significant new stories that fans of Dragon Ball Super might want to follow closely while waiting for the manga’s return.
