Dragon Ball Super: Can the Multiverse Make a Comeback?

In the past, the Majin Buu Saga held the pinnacle position in the Dragon Ball series and not even Dragon Ball GT could shift that perception among fans. However, everything took a turn with the debut of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, which introduced the idea of multiple universes, or the multiverse. The concept of the multiverse served as an exciting new angle for the contemporary era of the Dragon Ball franchise. It’s quite peculiar that this intriguing element now appears to hold little significance.

Initially, the idea of the multiverse was a key aspect in the storyline of Dragon Ball Super. However, since the Tournament of Power, the series appears to have shifted its focus away from this concept. Neither the Dragon Ball Super movies nor the manga-exclusive arcs touch upon the multiverse and instead are confined within Universe 7. With numerous intriguing ideas already presented, it’s important for the series to delve deeper into these concepts before they become completely forgotten.

Dragon Ball Super Has Neglected the Multiverse Since the Anime Ended

Moro, Granolah, Broly, and the Red Ribbon Army Are All Threats Confined to Universe 7

After the Tournament of Power, Dragon Ball Super has shown a blend of quality and weakness. Among its flaws, Dragon Ball Super: Broly stands as the franchise’s finest film, and the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga is undeniably the most well-crafted storyline in DBS. Conversely, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero didn’t quite reach its full potential due to several questionable choices, and the Granolah the Survivor Saga presents… The one unifying factor among these storylines is that they are all strictly confined within Universe 7.

In the initial three storylines of Dragon Ball Super, the multiverse was a central theme and was creatively employed in various ways. However, the last four tales seem to barely touch upon the multiverse at all. There have been no inter-universe journeys, no stories involving gods or angels from other dimensions, and no guest appearances by beloved characters from other universes such as Hit or the Universe 6 Saiyan trio. This strongly suggests that Dragon Ball Super may have grown disengaged with the multiverse, leaving one to wonder if they’ve run out of ideas for further exploration post-Tournament of Power.

Initially, the concept of the multiverse was a major attraction in “Dragon Ball Super”. It’s quite strange to observe how extensively this topic has been overlooked recently. Given that the series is not being produced weekly, it seems that two short arcs and two films might appear insufficient. Neither movie delved into the multiverse using Broly or Piccolo, while the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga aimed to provide a breather from the multiverse after, and the Granolah Saga primarily served as a prelude for the forthcoming Black Frieza Saga. With eight years having elapsed since it was last significant, one might wonder if the multiverse will regain relevance in the future.

Dragon Ball Super’s Multiverse is Still Filled with Potential

Dragon Ball Has Barely Even Begun to Explore its Multiverse

These story arcs, namely the “Dragon Ball” multiverse explorations such as the Universe 6 Saga, Future Trunks Saga, and Universe Survival Saga, each excelled at their unique aspects. The Universe 6 Saga introduced fans to a few characters from Universe 7’s counterpart, making it easier for us to grasp the multiverse concept. The Future Trunks Saga was an intriguing journey across different universes, with a formidable antagonist hailing from Universe 10. Lastly, the Universe Survival Saga gathered the strongest fighters across the multiverse for an epic tournament-style battle.

Despite the impressive feats accomplished within Dragon Ball Super’s multiverse, it underestimates the potential for further exploration post-Tournament of Power. There remains a wealth of untold stories that can be crafted from Dragon Ball’s multiverse. Notably, Goku and the Z-Fighters have yet to extensively traverse outside Universe 7, apart from brief visits to the Supreme Kai of Universe 10’s planet. To enhance its adventure elements and delve deeper into its world-building capabilities, Dragon Ball Super could benefit from dedicating an arc to a comprehensive tour of every universe in detail.

This proposal is ideal for Universes 1, 5, 7, and 12, since they weren’t assigned themed teams during the Tournament of Power, which means their characters remain undefined. The plot can easily commence with Vegeta keeping his promise to Cabba by visiting Planet Sadala in Universe 6. Additionally, delving deeper into the multiverse offers a straightforward explanation for introducing new antagonists. Since any number of reasons can be devised as to why these villains didn’t participate in the Tournament of Power, it makes it simple to bring in fresh threats.

Absolutely, Dragon Ball enthusiasts are eager for another Tournament of Power, yet if that’s the direction they choose, it shouldn’t merely cater to fans. While it would be exciting to see how much stronger characters like Jiren, Kefla, Top, and others from the initial ToP have grown, future events should also delve deeper into those controlling the tournament: Zeno, the Grand Priest, and the Angels. These characters are the most enigmatic in Dragon Ball Super, and it’s high time fans learn more about them, particularly following the introduction of Super Majin Rymus in Dragon Ball DAIMA.

It is Absolutely Not Too Late For Dragon Ball Super To Make the Multiverse Matter

Black Frieza is the First Major Villain to Truly Pose a Threat to All of Existence

In the realm of “Dragon Ball”, the flow of actual time holds little significance. Throughout the series, characters and ideas have been observed to vanish for years, becoming insignificant, then reappearing more prominent than before. If “Dragon Ball Super” does not revisit the multiverse in the next two years, or if it’s a whole decade since the Tournament of Power, it can still be relevant. However, if the series maintains its quality, this wouldn’t be an issue to worry about.

Ever since the Universe Survival Saga, it has been clear that Frieza’s main objective is to overthrow the Omni-Kings and rule the entire multiverse. For the Black Frieza Saga to be engaging, it needs to focus on Frieza’s efforts to achieve his goals. It’s already common knowledge that he’s currently the strongest mortal in the multiverse, and although Beerus claims to still be stronger, Frieza might not need much more training to challenge that. In essence, Black Frieza could potentially pose a serious danger to the entire multiverse, and if he were to acquire Zeno’s power, he would become an imminent threat that all beings in the multiverse would have to unite against.

If Black Frieza grows virtually invincible, it would compel the main characters from Dragon Ball Super to join forces with their most powerful allies from the Tournament of Power, and possibly even the Gods of Destruction. This union is vital as it addresses a significant issue that the Black Frieza Saga might encounter: the lack of diverse opposition for the Z-Fighters. While Frieza may possess enough strength to engage Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and Broly simultaneously, this doesn’t provide each main character with a distinct narrative role. At present, no one in Frieza’s forces can challenge the Z-Fighters effectively, but if Frieza ruled over the entire multiverse, he would have access to the strongest fighters in existence to serve him.

It would be particularly intriguing if taking Zeno’s throne granted him power over the Grand Priest and Angels, since it would create a dire situation and essentially compel Dragon Ball Super to delve into the characters of the Angels, as well as their histories. If Dragon Ball Super can effectively utilize the multiverse, it could represent a significant accomplishment for the series that fans have been eagerly anticipating. They are craving more multiversal combatants, insights into the gods and angels, and stories about Zeno’s past. Whether this unfolds in the Black Frieza Saga or later, focusing on the multiverse is undoubtedly the wisest choice for the manga.
