Dragon Age: The Veilguard Director Says Anthem Was a Lesson in Sticking to What You’re Good At
As a devoted fan who has witnessed BioWare’s evolution through the years, I find Jon Epler’s reflection on Anthem and their future endeavors particularly enlightening. Having traversed the fantastical realms of Ferelden, Thedas, and beyond, it’s heartening to know that BioWare is returning to its roots – storytelling and role-playing.
According to Jon Epler, the creative lead on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare learned from Anthem to focus on its strengths and excel in those areas.
According to Epler in an interview with Edge magazine (as reported by VGC), the studio is known for focusing extensively on crafting compelling narratives and immersive role-playing experiences.
As a passionate admirer, I’d share that he discussed Anthem – this intriguing blend of science fiction, action, and adventure featuring soaring robots and non-stop action. He hinted that maybe this genre, while exciting, might not be BioWare’s most familiar terrain.
“During Anthem, I took part for a year and a half, and there’s much about it that makes me feel proud. However, when all is said and done, our team was developing a game centered around an area where we might not have been as skillful.”
One key takeaway for both myself and our team is understanding our strengths and focusing even more on them.
“Maintain focus and specialize. Avoid taking on tasks that exceed your competencies. Many members of our team joined to develop a narrative-driven, solo role-playing game.”
As a passionate fan, I’ve got an intriguing perspective to share! Dive into our take on Anthem – a game where amidst the suboptimal optimization, endless loading screens, and some baffling design choices, Dan found a gem worth playing. Here’s what he said: “Buried deep within these challenges, there’s actually a good game waiting to be discovered.”
