‘Drag Race’ family mourns the Vivienne, a U.K. star who died at 32: ‘A true champion’
The participants and supporters of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” are grieving after the passing of British drag performer, the Vivienne, who sadly passed away this past weekend.
The Vivienne, perhaps most famously recognized for her victory in the first season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” and her fierce competition with other winners in the 2022 season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” is seen as something far greater by fellow drag queens.
The singer from Liverpool, known as James Lee Williams, was “an incredibly gifted drag artist and a wonderful person,” according to RuPaul’s Instagram tribute posted on Monday. Likewise, the official Instagram account for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” honored Vivienne for her “skills, humor, and commitment to the world of drag.
The memory of her will continue as a guiding light for creativity and originality, for she truly exemplified the essence of a genuine victor,” was the show’s declaration.
Television
Six international versions of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’, hosted by different people, were interviewed by The Times to discover the secrets behind the global success of this reality TV franchise.
Simon Jones, a publicist, shared on social media on Sunday that Vivienne had passed away, without disclosing the cause of death. He asked for privacy and understanding, acknowledging that it’s a difficult time for Vivienne’s family and loved ones who are still processing their grief. In another statement also released on Sunday, Jones expressed sorrow over Vivienne’s unexpected demise, stating that their career was just taking off.
In 2019, I, The Vivienne – named after the iconic late British punk fashion designer Vivienne Westwood – stepped into the “Drag Race” arena for the first time, entering the Werkroom in a dazzling metallic red power suit. “Ladies, don’t settle in too deeply,” I warned my fellow contestants, hinting at the challenges ahead.
In her initial private reflection during “Drag Race UK,” Vivienne expressed that she felt worthy to be a part of the show, as she had previously been appointed the U.K. representative for the “Drag Race” brand by RuPaul prior to the series.
She continued: “There will be no special treatment but I’m still going to slay.”
During her time on “Drag Race UK”, The Vivienne consistently held her own, earning multiple victories and avoiding elimination when other contestants took the win. She captivated both judges and audiences with her comical portrayals of Queen Elizabeth II in the debut episode and President Trump for the Snatch Game round.
Entertainment & Arts
As a movie enthusiast, I can attest that the groundbreaking production, “Velour: A Drag Spectacular,” co-created by Sasha Velour and Moisés Kaufman, truly lives up to its name during its world debut at La Jolla Playhouse. It’s an unforgettable experience!
In a single group challenge, things didn’t go as planned for The Vivienne, causing her to finish at the bottom. However, in the end, her performance surpassed that of Crystal, ensuring she took home the crown. Divina de Campo came in second place.
In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Crystal recalled Vivienne’s infectious self-assurance on set. Despite being nearly a decade younger than her, Vivienne radiated confidence that was palpable to everyone around. It was evident to all that she was destined for greatness. I’m truly grateful to have had the pleasure of knowing you.
2022 saw Vivienne make a comeback to the Werkroom for the inaugural season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” which featured only winners. Joining her were queens such as Jaida Essence Hall, Shea Coulée and the self-proclaimed “Queen of All Queens,” Jinkx Monsoon. Each of them expressed their excitement on social media platforms.
She’s left an indelible impression on us and her stages. The final bow might be premature, but I feel the applause is already standing. My dear Viv.” (Monsoon wrote) “I love you Viv.
A variety of “Drag Race” personalities, including Bob the Drag Queen, Jimbo, Trinity the Tuck, Priyanka, Baga Chipz, and judge Michelle Visage, paid tribute to Vivienne on social media.
Lifestyle
On this particular date, it felt uniquely different from any other I’d experienced. Instead of a traditional dinner or movie night, we opted for an adventure in Griffith Park. Later on, he shared that he was a contestant on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’
Apart from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the iconic Vivienne was involved in various other projects. She participated in the ITV competition “Dancing on Ice” and delved into music and theater. The BBC reports that she played the Wicked Witch of the West in a tour of “The Wizard of Oz” across the UK and Ireland, and portrayed the Childcatcher in a production of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” Just before her passing, the Vivienne hosted her own “Ultimate Queens Christmas Party” radio special for BBC.
On “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” contestant Vivienne candidly shared her battles with substance abuse and addiction. Just before being crowned, she confided in the judges that she would advise her younger self to simply resist, or “just say ‘no.’
As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t help but exclaim that if you dare to embark on this journey, it will be an exhilarating rollercoaster ride! And guess what? You’ll find yourself on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’, surrounded by extraordinary individuals. Trust me; this experience surpasses any gift imaginable.
