Dr. Dre gets restraining order dropped in legal battle with former divorce therapist

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for delving into the intricacies of real-life dramas, I find myself drawn to the latest chapter unfolding in the tumultuous saga of Dr. Dre’s life. The rap icon, born Andre Young, has once again found himself embroiled in legal strife, this time against a celebrity psychiatrist, Dr. Charles Sophy.

In his continuous court dispute, Dr. Dre emerged victorious over a well-known psychiatrist who recently filed a lawsuit claiming that the musician had been harassing him.

Previously, Dr. Charles Sophy, Dre’s former divorce therapist, had obtained a temporary restraining order against him, following the submission of a $10-million lawsuit. The lawsuit claimed that Dre had engaged in a persistent and harmful series of actions aimed at Dr. Sophy, which he labeled as a “campaign of harassment.

The temporary order against Dre was lifted on Tuesday, as the judge determined that there was insufficient evidence provided by Sophy to demonstrate that Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, constitutes a danger to his personal safety. Consequently, the psychiatrist’s petition for a long-term restraining order was denied.

In simpler terms, “Judge Melanie Ochoa stated on Tuesday that the person who asked for an order of protection did not provide enough evidence to support their claim, so the request was not granted.” (Paraphrased from the original statement)

Sophy’s professional association with Young started in 2018 as he began providing marriage counseling to the rapper Dr. Dre (formerly known as “Still D.R.E.”) and his then-wife, Nicole Young. After working tirelessly, independently, and impartially to assist them in resolving their disagreements, Sophy stopped communicating with the couple in 2021 when their divorce was officially finalized.

After about a year and four months had passed, Young unexpectedly initiated a prolonged series of offensive messages, late-night harassment with reminders he wouldn’t ‘forget’ Dr. Sophy, and derogatory comments based on sexual orientation,” the lawsuit stated, further explaining that Young targeted his anger over the mediation results towards the psychiatrist.

In the October 9th submission, it was alleged that Young had dispatched individuals to harass Sophy at their address. However, during the court hearing held on Tuesday, which he joined remotely via Zoom, Young refuted this claim, asserting his innocence.

I contend that Sophy’s legal action and the subsequent request for a restraining order represent an ill-conceived effort to tarnish my reputation, following my filing of a complaint with the California Medical Board last May. This is based on a document I recently reviewed and shared with The Times.

The rapper claimed the lawsuit following reports of an alleged attempt by Sophy to sabotage his relationship with his son. This was done, it seems, by persuading his son to share the rapper’s financial records with the media as part of a broader scheme to force an unequal divorce settlement upon him.

In my account, I acknowledged sending certain texts that Sophy presented in her October 9 harassment lawsuit. However, I want to clarify that they were sent during my pursuit of understanding his professional misconduct and my failed efforts to get him to explain his questionable behavior.

In a document submitted on Monday, attorney Howard E. King mentioned a police report from September 30th, in which Sophy expressed fear for his safety due to “recent incidents involving P. Diddy and the alleged aggressive behavior of Young’s companions.” King contended that Sophy’s evidence of emotional distress is based solely on stereotyping Black men, such as Young, as naturally prone to violence.

I, Christopher Frost, Sophy’s legal representative, have shared with Rolling Stone that the allegations of racism against my client, made in the recent filing by Young, are both unsightly and unjust.

Frost stated, “We’ve known all along that we’re dealing with a famous figure in this case. It might be tempting to make inflammatory and misleading statements about the situation, but let me be clear: Dr. Sophy has taken legal action due to Mr. Young’s persistent conduct. This recent ruling on Tuesday doesn’t alter that fact. In fact, Dr. Sophy remains dedicated to his lawsuit.

An initial hearing in the harassment case is scheduled for April 4.
